(CNN) -- Baseball writers balked at naming any new players to the sport's Hall of Fame on Wednesday, with none of the 37 eligible players drawing enough votes for a ticket to Cooperstown.

The 2013 ballot marked the first year of eligibility for several players who have been named in the probes of performance-enhancing drug use in the Major Leagues, including all-time home-run champ Barry Bonds and seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens. It's only the eighth time that no player received the 75% support needed to enter the Hall of Fame, and several of the voters said the results were a reflection of the sport's "steroid era."

The top candidate was longtime Houston Astros second baseman Craig Biggio, who racked up more than 3,000 hits in a two-decade career. Biggio received only 68% of the vote, but fell 39 votes short of election, Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson announced.

Baseball HOF is a joke, IMO.  Even if the voters refuse to vote someone in because of roids, which I disagree with, I just read that Clemens got 8 more votes than Bonds.  Both were the best at their position, but the only difference (that I can see) is that a lot of writers never liked Bonds and his attitude.  If a writer/voter is so petty that they base their votes on a popularity contest, I can't see how anyone can view the HOF as prestigious or even legitimate.

I'm glad they kept those steroid guys out. I hope they never get in the Hall. I heard a sports radio guy yesterday saying Biggio deserved to be treated just like the rest of them. I didn't remember allegations against him. Did his performance spike in the 2nd half of his career? I didn't remember his head expanding like Bonds and Sosa, but I didn't watch Houston much, except in the glorious World Series sweep by the White Sox.

I think Biggio will eventually become one of those borderline Hall of Famers. He got %67 of the vote in his first year. He never fully dominated his position like a clear cut Hall of Famer would, but he had the 3000 hits and lots of doubles and stolen bases and runs. More of an accumulation of statistics over a long period. If the Cubs could get 4 Hall of Famers from their late 60s early 70s team that never won anything then Houston deserves some representation for players who won the pennant.
