And the conclusion is?

My guess is that the at least one conlusion is that all copelandia spores in circulation in the online mushroom community belong to the species cyanescens.

But I look forward to reading more conclusions as I'm sure more can be gleened from this valuable research. Thanks Teonan!

I'd like to know how you prepared the gill plate to view the pleurocystidia.

There are some significant differences there. Im sure if Guzman was looking at those he would have about four different panaeolus species - he has delineated psilocybes for less significant microscopic variations.
Did you find many with brown-pigmented cystidia?

excellent !
Very interesting but confusing to learn that noone has the famous
Tropicalis (thinking about those i grew from Ralphter's...i must re-labelling my prints "cyanescens" instead of "tropicalis" :frown:)...
Mjshroomer !!! Please bring us back some other copes from Thailand !

LOL Bluemeanie.  No subaeruginosa amongst the bunch.

By the way.  I think all of the specimens you sent can be placed under the australiana complex.  Only two had spores slightly outside the known range.  All had cystidia that could fall under EACH and EVERY Australian Psilocybe, EXCEPT Subaeruginosa, which mysteriously has disappeared from the face of the earth.

If you are running compatability tests!!!
Test  specimens R and A2 against any of the others. Both of these had spores slightly outside the australiana complex.
R might represent eucalypta and A2 might be tasmaniana.  Other then that they are all pretty similar microscopically.

No specimen contained cystidia that could not be found in the other specimens. A few had some unique variations, but even these also contained common Cystidia with the others.
There was less variability between all of the specimens you sent then is Pictured above!!!

I would really appreciate a copy of that Chang and Mills study!!!

Ha! Your on to me! Still trying to work out where Guzman got that Idea!!
I can send you Buchanan, which is very detailed. Im still trying to get MJ to sort through his vault of info for the Chang and Mills paper.
So we had lots of bowling pin Lageniform cystidia again? Oh well, worth a check! The huge macroscopic differences did warrant it, but again im not surprised. Still waiting on spore compability studies, but that info is great and ill pass it on. You didnt notice any forked cystidia?? SOme of those were found in locations that were atleast 1200kms apart! So its quite amazing
There are some huge differences with those copes - do you have pictures of these macroscopically as well? That would be quite interesting - as i doubt so many types of copes have been compiled in the one thread before.

Cut a triangle wedge out of the cap. The base of the triangle is the outer edge of the cap. The pointed side of the triangle originates at the center of the cap.

Then cut parallel to the base of the triangle wedge. Repeat as close as possible to the cut edge. Now you have a very thin slice that contains a piece of the cuticle and a bunch of gill fragments.

I view this entire piece at 100 x for counting the spores per basidia.

I then cut entire pieces of gill fragments off the slice. These are mounted in distilled water only, if they are fresh mounts.

If they are dry caps, you can rehydrate by placing in ethyl alcohol for a minute and then place in water.
I choose not to stain because this Genus has easily distinguished Cystidia!!!

When cutting up the gill fragments make sure you include the gill edge for viewing cheliocystidia.

Still viewing cystidia variations with your Australian Psilocybes!!!

I don't have macros of all the copelandias studied. Some casings weren't very pretty!!! Hate showing pics of a few shrooms popping out of a half green casing covered in baking soda, lime, etc...

Will eventually have pics of all those documented. Still have another wild mexican that needs to be done up. Got it in a trade as a mexicana. It resembles the wild MR.G, on agar,VERY MUCH!!!

I know what you mean - the ones that i had labelled Trops turned out to be very mutated.
Here is a link to the macroscopic appearance of the mushroom labelled 'R' which was the specimens sent from Ruskifile in Sydney.

Edited to provide cystidia size of the cambodginiensis strain. It is slightly larger then it should be. So are the spores.
