That's what you've been deluded into thinking. How would psychiatric evaluations make it harder for a sane person to get a gun? How would fingerprint scanning technology harm peaceful gun owners? If anything it would add a level of safety and it would keep any newly made gun out of the black market.

how would psychiatric evaluations stop criminals from getting guns, how would
biometric scanners be implemented on the 300 million or so gun in the US already

just what level of safety have you deluded yourself into believing that this
would bring about, criminals dont go through the channels, criminals will
bypass biometrics, criminals will make their own shit if they intend to kill

Is there a link to support your claim? I'd really like to see what a gun with such technology cost.

Maybe the numbers I'm looking at are wrong, but from what I see there were 8,583 deaths related to gun crimes last year (in the US).

There are about 25,000 deaths related to alcohol every year (in the US).

Maybe we should be focusing on restricting alcohol

Nothing?

hahahahaha... in this thread alone there's been calls for bans on 'assault
rifles', calls for bans on high capacity magazines and it's also in the news
with thousand of people on the internet calling for various gun bans

now why you wanna try and blow smoke up my ass

Quote:
Most of us want gun control meaning safety measures designed to protect peaceful gun owners and to keep guns out of the hands of those that want to cause harm to others, obviously.

there's already laws in place for this, where do you think they failed?

Quote:
Sure there are some people who are in favor of various bans on specific weapon types that hold the same killing power as explosives, if not more, which are banned, but what many people in this thread and in the debate are talking about is simply increased safety measures.

but you said that no one is trying to ban anything, now suddenly they are

which rifle has the same 'killing power'' as a 100megaton nuke?

does this help to illustrate how ridiculous your statement is.

They might stop would-be criminals from acquiring firearms and would allow these would-be criminals to become cognizant of their mental health issues so they can get help and better their own lives. I already have answered your second question a million times.

Quote:

I'ts not going to get rid of all crime or violence, we all know that. However, at least these criminals will need to put more effort into finding/making the proper tools and they would be using their own homemade guns rather than stealing a professionally produced, accurate gun from it's rightful owner and using it. Really though eliminate the ease with which one can purchase guns online would be a huge step in limiting the black market gun business. That coupled with these safety measures would have an effect of decreasing the overall incidence of gun violence, I don't know how you can even begin to argue that.

Charlie Sheen said:

I don't know the exact cost, I know that there's a fingerprint scanner on my laptop which was much cheaper overall than the majority of guns so it can't be that expensive to implement.

Alcohol is restricted, there's an age you must be to purchase it and there's a legal limit for you to be driving a vehicle, which is the only way alcohol is really related to innocent deaths other than belligerence and violence which is more dependent upon the drinker than the drink.

coincidentally, an 8yo cant walk into a gun store and buy a gun and bullets

since when is a physical required? CDL, yes. a class C, no.

to get a drivers license here I answer some questions, present proof of age
(16+) proof of identity and and I'm allowed to drive

to buy a gun I have to answer some questions, provide proof of identity and
age (21+) and then submit to a background check that is run by the state
crime lab through the NCIC computers to ensure I'm not disallowed from owning
a gun due to mental illness, drug addiction or felony conviction

seems to me it's more difficult to get a gun than a driver's license or maybe
you still believe that the stores just let anyone with money have one

Just to let everyone see the way Pris makes his cheap shot points, by editing quotes to fit his assertions.

This is the way he edited a quote, then claimed I didn't provide a source for the data:

koods said:
The US had 9146 homicides by gun with 270 million guns.

So, the number of gun homicides per million guns:
41/3.4 = 12.05 England
9146/270 =  33.87 US.

So, you are wrong. In reality our gun homicide rate per gun is three times higher than theirs.

Reducing the number of guns has a multiplying effect. You end up reducing gun homicides at a higher proportion to the sheer number of guns themselves.

Now, notice the actual lines before the point where he started to quote me. Yes, the source of the data he claims I didn't provide:
koods said:
.... The data was published in the Guardian - also why they break the UK into separate countries.) there are 3.4 million guns in England and Wales.  Here's the XLS of the data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AonYZs4MzlZbdExSbktqRWpLMjNUMkFGVk5VODRyTnc

The US had 9146 homicides by gun with 270 million guns.

So, the number of gun homicides per million guns:
41/3.4 = 12.05 England
9146/270 =  33.87 US.

So, you are wrong. In reality our gun homicide rate per gun is three times higher than theirs.

It is hard to have an honest debate with someone who actively lies.

This is so stupid.

20 dead children is the only statistic that matters. How do we stop that from happening again?

If a thumbprint scanner would have saved those lives 'responsible' gun owners should be jumping at the chance, no matter the cast, to save those lives, because all of their 'protection' sure didn't.

Is it really Orwellian to offer someone who is mentally ill psychiatric help? This isn't about the government, this is about mental health issues. I'm not saying we're going after criminals for their crimes before they commit them but rather saying that if we make help available to those who would otherwise go on a shooting spree maybe we can stop it before it occurs and improve their lives as well as protecting potential victims.

Quote:

Who here is blaming the gun? It seems like you're the only one suggesting that. I'm saying that guns are half the equation, just like alcohol is half the equation when it comes to alcohol related deaths.
