Relationship with entertainment

Does it seem to anyone else that our current society has an unhealthy relationship with entertainment. What does "entertainment" really mean?

Is entertainment a type of addiction?

Is addiction a type of entertainment?

What is entertainment and what isn't? Is reading entertainment? Does it depend on the subject matter of the book?

Is existence really just a form of entertainment?

How do you feel when you aren't entertained?

Do you feel a right to be entertained?

Why is it that the most expensive and "important" things in most homes are part of the entertainment center? Has this become the altar of modern society?


Is entertainment a good thing or a bad thing?


At the suggestion of a spiritual friend of mine, I am taking a long hard look at entertainment.

we are all just waiting in a way.. people move to the city to get by

money competes against time for people.. getting an entertainment out of things isn't enjoyed unless it's worked for

As a whole, I think so.  I think many are just passing time with it rather than seeking to be challenged or grow.

Is entertainment a type of addiction?

It can be.  Some people like to hide from silence.  Others are capable of entertaining themselves or simply being entertained by whatever is around them.

I wouldn't call it entertainment, though I can see it being easy to fall into if you don't have something you're driven by.   

What is entertainment and what isn't? Is reading entertainment? Does it depend on the subject matter of the book?
Anything to keep ya busy or interested.

Being alive is entertaining,

As much as I have a right to be alive.

I think some have lost the ability to entertain themselves.

Neither, people just have different aims.  Some like to avoid certain issues with it or just pass time, others use it to learn, grow, develop etc.










After looking back at this,  I'm not sure what to say :lol:.

Depends on how healthy the entertainment is. Learning online, gaming, music, and hiking are my main forms of entertainment, each used as avenues of personal development. Even if not healthy, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie or show every now and then if it's not overindulged in, particularly if it's socially. Addiction I see as a separate issue, and can include legal entertainment in it's manifestation.

Laughter is also a component of a healthy life, imo...very necessary entertainment.

entertainment is what you do when you dont have anything you need to do.

it is not inerently bad by any means.

i would say the more isolate, repetative and addictive forms of entertainment are a greater danger of becoming a bad habit (i.e. binging on sitcoms, stupid games, food, alcohol, pokie machines etc). they become bad when they disrupt your life indirectly (i.e. you become fat from over eating, you lose your money from gambling, you lose your liver from drinking etc) but also when they disrupt your life directly (i.e. the behavior itself gets in the way of social life, family and friends etc), and worse if it is used to replace or fill a lack in social life.

none of those behaviors i mentioned are inherently bad tho and can be used in healthy ways.

I guess there again, it depends on what your perspective of "entertainment" is.

I think many people are made to be tools because of their need for entertainment.

There are many ways to use traditional entertainment means to develop and refine personal qualities, or to achieve more practical goals. Boils down to the quality of information you're taking in, and how you interact with it, from my perspective. Music, movies, games, art, tv shows...all can be used for very profound developmental purposes or consumed like junk food. Developing and exploring imaginative abilities is a pretty crucial element of being a human, which is often overlooked in the modern world. People tend to get stuck in limiting but comfortable routines without a healthy logic-tempered imagination to envision new potential paths to tread.

If you can enjoy while still being in ding (state of concentration, produces an audible sound that is subtle) then you are not distracted.

Many people use entertainment to distract themselves from concentration.

That is why you do not see people actually meditating in front of a t.v.

I came across this in a wolves in the throne room interview.  I think the distinction between that which builds onto/touches something that will endure and that which only seeks to amuse for a moment is worthwhile.

And that is the way I feel about art and music! Finally found a way to explain it to people.

I have criticized mass media, but it is merely an interpretation of mass media that makes you stupid.

There are infinitely many ways to interpret what your television delivers to your eyes and ears.

It can be spiritual, full of revelations and creative wonder.

There is a basic blue print for all this media and it's really bad, yet you can make it amazing. Just imagine what would happen if it was amazing to begin with, that is, the people who made it were in your wondrous state of mind when they created it.

That's what we need to aim for.
