reptiles

So I just came up on a six ft terrarium. It's all hand made with wood and plexy glass. It's big and nice.

I've decided to convert it into a bar (which is in progress).

But the reason of this post is that I've always been a fish guy, and haven't had any reptiles before. So I want you guys to give me some suggestions of cool critters I can get.

My favorite reptilians are the British Royal family. They'll be a high degree of difficulty to capture though. Otherwise, I suggest dinosaurs or their living descendants. You can never go wrong with dinosaurs.

get like 50 hermit crabs... or a cobra

Edit: ik hermit crabs aren't reptiles but if you end up getting a boa constrictor or some shit that never moves then hermit crabs is what you should have got:thumbup:

i got a frilled neck lizard and a stimsons python both are fucking AWESOME! used to have a bearded dragon but upgraded to the frilly :biggrin:

Boa constrictors are super cool snakes and not really hard to care for at all.  A lot of people use 6' housing for full sized adults but what are the other dimensions of your terrarium?

Boas aren't completely stationary.  Mine is pretty active, especially when I'm handling her.  Like most other midsize-large ectothermic organisms, they tend to conserve energy by not moving a lot much of the time.

Bearded Dragons or Ball Python are good 'starter pets' for people who want to get into reptiles.

Green iguanas are cool for a long-term pet, but they can be a bit high maintenance and they can be prone to disease.

try looking at pygmy monitors, now they are a bloody cool reptile. dont even need a big terrarium

Get a box turtle.:feelsgoodman:  I have one and it's awesome.  Ask Gumby about reptiles he should be able to help you.

Snakes are usually easier to care for, especially desert species. No matter what you get do your research first. A chameleon is cool, but with poor husbandry and environment, it will die in a couple of weeks. My Kenyan sand boa doesn't need water, and has gone up to 18 months without eating (they tend to fast during mating season). Long as his heat lamp is going and he has a moist hide box, I can forget about him for weeks at a time with no issues.

Then there is the issue of feeding. My snake will only eat live, which is a PITA. Keeping crickets and worms can be a pain as well. Live food also can escape, fight back, and die before feeding time.

Finally I cannot emphasis enough, do your research, and be honest about what you are looking for in a reptile. Don't bite off more than you can chew just because it "looks badass". A buddy of mine has a dwarf caiman, but dude has owned over 100 snakes, dozens of lizards, chameleons and tortoises in his time. Getting a caiman was something that he was prepared for, and was not an animal that he got on a whim.

I'm leaning more into the direction of non aggressive critters. Doesn't have to be a reptile but something that would do well in a terrarium. Something that would be entertaining for drunk people to watch :thumbup:

I love my ball python. Super low maintenance, super easy to care for- and yet really active too after ten or so, with a surprising amount of "personality" (although it's really just perceived personality and they all have the same)- but that's a plus too, because when it dies you can get another and basically have the same experience.
