seriously, get an argentine black and white tegu! i have one, its pretty scary but  you can tame them.  check out agamainternational.com. u can even keep em outside in some placees!


or dumerils boa. great patterns not too big.  pm me if yu need good sources

Uhhh... a tegu as a first reptile? How about no? They take a lot of work to train them to be people friendly and they can bite the living fuck out of you, and tail slap you till you have welts. Plus they get huge. Still they're better than, say, a Savannah monitor.

Dumerils boa might work, but they could be a bit nippy. A boa bite could be quite the shock for a first time reptile keeper. Like 300 recurved needles piercing your skin at once. No bueno.  They also get large, but don't require as much space as a tegu.

my tegu isnt tame but it doesnt try to bite or whip just doesnt like being held and i hardly ever handle him.  savanah moniters are also great animals, one of the nicest best moniters.  read up about them and its not that hard. theres plenty of people that sell already tamed tegus.  you cant just buy them from some piece of shit petshop on the corner. search the net. 

people always say the dumerils are nippy. not at all IME.  theyre nice. you dont even have to hold em that much to tame em at all.  ive had mine for a few years and it never bit me except one time wen it was hungry. 

the trick is, get thew animal as a juvenile and raise it and most of the time theyll love you and be nice. or look for people that dont want theyre pets anymore and make sure theyre tame( try to handle it b4 you adopt or w/e).  pm me i know GREAT reptile companies that have a great selection, good prices, healthy animals, knowlegable staff.  one place even has an expert for each type of animal they sell( lizard guy, snake guy, frog guy, you get the idea). 


if your wimpy and afraid of a few possible scratches, get a chuckwalla. that was one of my altime favorite reptiles. easy as hell, look cool, eat veggies and fruits and weeds in your yard.

i used to breed veiled chameleons. theyre a hardy breed & arent too costly.

the leopard gecko worked well for me... I've had mine for 10 years now

I've kept Savannah monitors before, they can be evil little bastards. They are pure muscle. If you don't work hard to keep them tamed they can REALLY fuck you up when they get older.

I totally agree with you on getting a juvenile or hatchling then raising it, that way it gets used to you and it's aggressive nature doesn't surface as much.

As far as chuckwallas go, never kept them before. Never seen them for sale. I'd imagine their care is similar to that of Uromastyx, which is pretty easy to care for, they just need some really high temps.

Look into an "Children's" boa or a corn/rat/king snake...They can be kelp in small sweater box

Most of the ginormous ambush predator frogs are really, really easy to keep. I've had my Pyxie frog for about 6 years and I clean his tank maybe once a month. They're just not the most interesting animals, very sedentary. And you can't handle them much really, they will bite the shit out of you. Yeah I know "a frog will bite you? LOL."  Fuckers have teeth though. A bite from a big one might require stitches. It is kinda cool to feed them mice though.

BTW: I was kind of a dick earlier with that response, my bad.

Since I think the OP has enuff information to get started.....
What would you recomend Gumby for a nice sized critter for me to get in Kansas.

I like unruly pets ,my last pet was a pair of 130 pound plus rottwielers a male and female.......The meter readers read the meter from next door with biniculars:rofl2:

I was wanting a good pet of that nature for kansas ,I was thinking alligator ,but thats just a little too unruly once they get big ,I dont mind a few stitches or a painful bite .

Alligators are a lot more chill than people realize, you just have to give them a certain amount of space. We have a huge lake filled with all kinds of alligators right in the center of town.

OP - Leopard Gecko is the way to go. You can find some with really insane markings like 'Jungle', Albino, Tangerine, etc. Theyre a pretty docile reptile. I used to breed them, theyre pretty easy to breed if you ever get interested.

Start small. Try a Tokay Gecko. If the bleeding wound you get isnt big enough, upgrade to a Tegu or Savannah monitor and tap it on the head until you get your fix.

Sounds about right. I have a male-female pair of Tokay Geckos. Albeit small (12-15 inches), they are BY FAR, the most aggressive, assholeish personality reptiles I've ever owned. They have some serious teeth and will bite the shit out of you. Not only that, but they clamp down and don't let go for up to 2-3 hours. I've learned that sticking them under water makes them let go. Apparently breathing is more important than biting a "predator" :lol:

unretarded: if you want some kind of semivicious lizard/crocodilian reptile you have a few options.

As far as lizards go, there are a lot of monitor family lizards that fit the bill. Savannah monitors, Nile monitors, Goannas, and Tegus are a good bet and tend to be easy to find. Arboreal (tree dwelling) monitors tend to a bit a bit more tame, and significantly more expensive and somewhat more difficult to keep.

If you're thinking more along the lines of a crocodilian you really only have one or two practical options. American alligators, which is the most readily available are a ridiculously stupid option. Seriously, don't go that route. Males grow up to 18 feet. Cuvier's Caiman (aka Dwarf Caiman) is your best bet, they max out around 5 feet, but are pretty pricey because they are rare. Other Caimans might work, but most will hit at least 8 feet. And those could easily tear off a limb at that size.

Granted that you will have the space on your Kansas property for a true alligator or crocodile, I strongly advise against it. Just not worth the risk, especially if you have no handling experience. That's almost like telling someone who has no experience with venomous snakes to get a rattlesnake. You're just asking for trouble/losing a limb.

look up an adult asian water monitor. those things are fucking huge.  the thing a lot of people dont know about monitors/tegus is that theyre actually  really smart. if you put in the time and effort you could have a cool ass and nice pet. ive read about people having 5 foot tegus roaming around the house that respond to theyre name just like a dog.

i have a source. theyre really cool animals. theyre WAY easier than a bearded dragon IMO and they do this cool thing where they inflate their lungs like a ballon so theyre 2.5 inches thick and a couple seconds later theyll deflate and be like 1 cm thick. they do that so they can hide in rocks and be impossible to get em out. 

ps gumby, any tips on what plants would go good in a big frogs cage to make it look cool. (ive never used live plants in cages ecept for chameleons) hes a decent sized cane toad that eats mice.

What are you keeping the humidity at? High, medium, or low? How much water is in the tank in general? That'll determine what kind of plants you can put in there. In the end I guess it doesn't matter too much, you can change the environment for the plants if necessary. Cane toads are some resilient mofos.

Have any pics of the cane toad? I've always considered keeping them. Kinda seems counter productive to keep an invasive species though (but that hasn't stopped me in the past, lol). How'd you get it? I would imagine they are outlawed in most states. You catch him?

i bought him in the classifieds on kingsnake.com. his venom glands are huge!  theres only a bowl of water for him to chill in and some bark ontop of this mud called excavator or something for burrowing animals. he has the trippiest fucking pupils and one time we were just staring at each others eyes for like 10 mins on shrooms. should i keep the pplants in pots or try to plant em somehow?
