Why are so many African-American women fat?

It seems a bit odd.

21% of Caucasian females are obese whereas 39% of African-American women are.

I would say it might have to do with the inequalities in our education system.

I'd wager it has something to do with the rich diet they tend to have. I'm not exactly skinny myself and I eat a lot of the same stuff they do since I live in the South and all.

Black women, especially southern black women eat a lot of high-fat and fried foods.

Also, a lot of black women don't mind being "thick" as they put it. While most white women want to be as skinny as possible.

Just my opinion tho..:shrug:

Actually just watch a few episodes of Paula Deen (older ones, pre-diabetes :lol:) then realize that these women eat this stuff pretty much daily... You won't need to wonder again.

Turns out sticking a whole a stick of butter in a single serving of mashed potatoes isn't very healthy..

All of the above, plus sadly the majority of those in poverty in the US are African American. The food they can afford, ie fast food and processed shit is unhealthy. Eating well costs money as any vegan/organic freak will tell you.

Unless you got your own farm etc, before all you other gardening types jump at me.. :grin:

Yes that is true and there is nothing wrong with being "thick".
However this chart is not about overweight-ness but OBESITY.


Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

I'm talking about African-AMERICANS, as in blacks in the US.

Africans (from Africa) are basically the skinniest people in the world. I'm not envious because they are sometimes dangerously so.

Its plenty possible to eat well and spend much less than you would at mcdonalds etc... raw goods aren't very expensive - garden or not - especially if there's a local farmers market you can hit up.

How about just eating less food?  And I am not convinced that healthy food is that much more expensive.

Very true, but most Americans aren't even aware that farmer's markets exist and rather go the unhealthy, convenient route and just grab some fast food.

Education about eating healthy and cheap should be part of every school's curriculum starting in Kindergarten.

The Obesity epidemic is only getting worse. What are we up to like %60 percent of our population being overweight now? That's mind-blowing.

cheap and/or government subsidized food items tend to have alot of high fructose corn syrup in them

plus many grocery stores are really just convenient stores in a heavily populated area

With the same food and activity pattern, many African populations have a somewhat greater tendency to get obese than Europeans. Oversimplifying it greatly, "famine favors obesity genes"

I'm with you on that qman. 

Today I ate 2 eggs with 1 oz of shredded cheese and salsa. $0.70 tops

Muffin, $0.30 tops

6-inch subway sandwich, $2.10

Banana $0.20


I don't see how people can complain about eating at $5-8 a day when I can feast like a king on less then that.
