millzy said: to me "addict" is a term that someone applies to themselves in order to recognize what's going on with them in order to resolve an issue. while i'm aware that aa helps a lot of people, an aspect of its philosophy that i vehemently disagree with is the whole "once and addict always an addict". perhaps a lot of people who consider themselves "addicts" shouldn't ever pick up a pipe or a bottle again with good reason. but putting yourself in such black and white terms seems to be a slippery slope in that it's a constant reminder that you are walking right on the edge of ruining your life at all times. having that looming over my head would make me want a nice stiff drink. it's an oversimplification of a really complex psychological condition that often leads to failure imo.
another thing from my experience with aa is that it actually put me closer to people who were bad influences. this was another thing that was foisted on me by my parents right before the military school thing. fuckin 14 years in old sitting in aa meetings. and the sad thing is that i wasn't alone in my age group. i had no business being in a room full of (mostly) really sick people at that age, and as a result it led me to more trouble. my parents were too chickenshit to even pay the slightest attention as to what was really going on with me, and for them it was far easier to just let someone else deal with me. at first it was the doctors and their hospitals, and then it was the drunks. when it came down to them handing me over to a military school i said fuck it and left.
ultimately op, this is about you, and you need to find someone who you trust and will actually listen to what you have to say rather than do your thinking for you.
Wow, I feel you man... same thing here starting at 20, except my parents are supportive to the point of being crippling. They've both been retired for a while so they're me and my brother's support team usually.
Psych hospital -> misdiagnoses/diff "meds" for my "disorder", then when I had to drop 2 semesters ago from the pills making me so paranoid I didn't really smoke K2 or even drink that much, maybe 1-3 times every week or two, just getting buzzed and watching a movie or going to the bars once in a rare while.
THEN I started going to AA, my doctor started to see me more as the stereotypical ADHD boy but also into drugs, and now my doctor kind of accepts that I can function well and do drugs here and there (I've learned so much about them he's offered to take me onto his research team as an assistant, shit you not). But man, I never started doing most of this alcoholic crap until I started making my life focus on *not* doing something marginally bad and trying to see myself as helpless and always in a precarious position to ruin my life. Honestly I feel like I was partly trying to fit in with them too... feeling left out is a huge thing for me.
The consensus on AA in the social science community seems to be that it isn't any more effective than nothing at all. A couple studies say its better, a couple say its worse, most say it doesn't really do anything above the rate of spontaneous remission, and some suggest that it increases members mortality rate (which I believe based on what I've heard and with their "total sobriety or you're helpless and will die/end up in jail/end up in an asylum" thing).
And OAAAAA is completely stupid. With things like meth and heroin, it's super easy to get to a point where you can't even consider dabbling and there doesn't seem to be much room for that with drugs like those anyway, but weed and alcohol are different beasts. K2 though, is a lot harder of a drug than we're giving it credit before.
