College or No?
    #2485823 - 03/31/04 01:10 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So, how many of us here have gone/ go to college, as opposed to just moving out and making it on our own? It seems society puts a lot of emphasis on getting a college education nowadays, saying that you can't get a good job without one. I'm wondering because I plan on doing the latter, moving to Oregon as soon as I have enough money amassed to do so, as I have no strong interests besides writing and would prefer to not waste my time typing 100-page essays about books for an English major. If I do go to college, it'd probably end up being something like photography, so I can go mushroom hunting and hiking all the while taking pictures, maybe even get a job with it one of these days. Possibilities possibilities.

So what about you?

Well, an English major would help you in your writing endeavours.  For one, you'd improve all of your overall writing skills as well as learning about the history of writing which is useful too.  In the end though, if you are already intelligent and are not planning on focusing on a difficult major or path like med school, college might not be the best path.  Although it will be more difficult to get a well paying job if you don't have that degree.  I'm sort of wasting away in college right now, slowly going mad and generally having no direction or motivation.  Makes me kind of want to take up photography and wander off into the forest.

I'm in the same boat as you. They pretty much brainwashed me (parents as well) that if you don't go to college, you'll fail life and end up working minimum wage in a factory the rest of your life.

man, I don't even know what the fuck I want to do in life. No clue. So I'm just goin to college for Graphic Design, since I'm good at it. But it's no damn passion of mine, I'll tell you that. I think I look more forward to getting out of the house and on my own. getting away from the goddamn dialup internet. Girls. Drugs. Girls. Girls.

Man, it is so weird you said all that?
I am nearly done my degree (I just need to do the course where all you do is a 100 page essay, to finish!)
And, I have decided I just want to write, aswell.
But here are the things I got out of four years of higher education:
1) My writing is much better
2) I have a way better work-ethic then before
3) I have met some incredible people, who I am sure I will know for life
4) Gave me a chance to learn another language and travel to the countries where they speak it
5) I learned that lesson Tereance McKenna always tried to teach  ?Society is not your friend!?  Being here and seeing that it was pretty much society that convinced 90% of the people here that they ought to come.  And they walk around talking inane nonsense, studying thinks like Physical Education?god damn it?that saddens me (I wrote a diatribe on this topic on one of the schools public forums, got some controversy.)
I know the last point seems like an argument against going, but hey, if I didn?t, I wouldn?t have realized that Society REALLY is out to screw you.  At least now I have the tools make a change.

People that fought the status quo like Leary, McKenna, Gandhi, Capernicus?they all understood that a formal education was key to changing things?.

Look at me write like people like reading this long stuff...that?s another thing school does to you?

That's what I was thinking, plus it's not like I'm a very materialistic person. All I really want is an internet connection, rent, food and drugs (which wouldn't cost any money anyways if played right); I don't need a telephone or cable TV or any other American luxury. It'd be easy for me to get by on a good $20,000 a year, maybe even less, hence it doesn't matter much to me about getting a high-paying job. If I went to college, it wouldn't be for a better-paying job, but rather for the experience, and there's nothing there I want to experience that I can't by living my own life.

Im in college because i have to be. I mean, my folks would support me in anything I chose to do, but they really think its in my best interest to get a degree. I suppose I feel the same way, I would like a nice job (nice in that I enjoy it, regardless of pay), but honestly this place is killing me. I have always, and will always continue to hate school. I think about dropping out everyday and about all the other possible things I could do and where I could do them.

so I just count the hours and doodle to pass the time.....

I would argue that with examples of many hippies and musicians and writers, but you do have a point, many modern philosophers have gotten a formal degree. Though in examples such as Leary, they seemed to be changed after they had gone through the system, partially why Leary, who was once just a college professor, turning into an acid-dropping father of the hippies, was such a surprise. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had done acid before he had gone to college and became a professor.

It's good points everyone makes, I haven't thought of some of these.

Serious about photography and mushrooms?

Go to lord fairfax community college in VA. No Joke.

Professor Simpson (VERY WELL KNOWN NAT. RESOURCE PROF/PROFESSIONAL PHOTORAPHER) teaches several nature photography courses and a mushroom class, and many many other good ones. VAs prolly a long way away, but i assure you will not find a better program.

I am serious about anything that I put my mind to and enjoy, and mushrooms and photography would definitely fall under those categories. However, I don't know what the chances of getting a good photography job are, and if that would even pay a good enough amount of money to live on. And by good photography job I'm not referring to Playboy and porn, but rather serious natural photography.

Well, I already have one degree in Forestry. Unfortunately there are few jobs to be had in this field. So, I'm persuing another degree in Accounting. The job outlook is much better, it's pretty easy once you learn the ropes, and it can be pretty lucrative!
Overall, I'd say my college experience was a positive one, even whilst persuing the degree in Forestry, and I think I'm the better for it!

I went to college, completed one semester and then started smoking dope everyday and I burnt out real quick. I'm now back at home. I don't even work. I'm on disability because I'm too crazy to work. I've already given up on life. I'll probably be another crazy bum on the street someday or working at mcdonalds.

I love college...and it's keeping me from having to commit to a 9-to-5 . I've been receiving financial aid for about a year and am now looking into scholarships. I graduated from a state school in '98 as an English major (writing concentration, creative nonfiction)...you're not missing much. Anyhow, I could contentedly go to school for the rest of my life and die a satisfied man . It's a what-you-give-is-what-you-get continuum, but most importantly, it's fun and good for your soul.

I went to colledge in the uk which goes until your 18 years old ( i dont know the us equivalent) and now i am lucky enough that i am rich enough to not have to work . I still do work but its a matter of choice and most of my time at work is spent writing fiction and philosophy ( i am the boss there ). I still wonder about going to university and getting a formal degree but i just cant see how it would benefit me , especially considering the amount of time and effort it would take.

I'm gonna give you my best advice about college I can in case you decide to go. They are essentially just businesses. I don't know if all universities are as greedy and uncaring about the students as the one I went to but I think many of them are. In the beginning, they will be worried about the possibility of you transferring your $Money$ to another school and they will guide you and hold your hand. Nearer the end, when they know there is less chance of you taking your $Money$ elsewhere, they will stop helping you, in fact you may find that it is very difficult to get course advice during your junior and senior years as they would like nothing better than for you to need an extra semester or two to keep paying tuition. So prepare yourself for that.

I graduated with a chemistry degree, and I now have almost no interest in chemistry. I really didn't know what the hell I was doing in college, and would have been better off if I'd used the time to travel, or find out what I might be interested in. There is no reason to go to college right now if you don't want to - you can put it off, no problem.
Also, if you put it off, you might get better financial aid (depending on how much money your parents make).

Che_Night_Soil -
Did I read you correctly - you graduated in '98, and you're going to college in something else now? And getting financial aid?
hmmm... going back to college, now there's an idea...

I'm in school now, working on a Pharmacology and Toxicology degree, and I enjoy it every day for many of the reasons stated above...

I've met dozens and dozens of great people here, i've had alot of experiences I wouldnt have had otherwise, and I learn TONS of new stuff every day.
