First time, looking for ID...
    #1737402 - 07/22/03 04:18 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, after reading all the sticky threads and such I think I have pinned down a possible id for mushrooms found in East Melbourne, Australia.

The cap of one is quite white (the middle photo) while the caps of several others found nearby are quite orangey/brown.

I wasn't able to make a spore print, because they was pretty badly knocked up in the bag we carred em in. At the moment I am leaning towards (praying for) "Psilocybe subaeruginosa". However they did NOT bruise blue :frown:

They are also pretty small, the cap is maybe 3cm across with a 4-5cm stem.

Any ideas on what these guys are and if they will kill us?

So the blue-ing should always be the first thing we look for?

briusing in not the first sign to look for and not all active mushrooms bruise conspiciously blue but the species in question should do so regularly.

aside from the above, i doubt that those are P. subs.

i am amazed that ytou read the stickies and did not get a print color...

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yes, bruising should never be used in means of Id because some active species bruise and others don't, and some poisnous species also bruise too. It looks like some type of Panaeolus species because of the gills. It is def not Psilocybe subaeruginosa because it looks totally different. Check out this site, it has a pic of a Psilocybe subaeruginosa on it, but w/e it is, I doubt its active, and it could be poisonus so don't eat it until you have some experts Id it for you.
