Vegan Honey Debate
    #17319723 -

Hey Shroomery, good morning.  I'm sitting here drinking some freshly brewed Yerba Mate and I used to drink it a lot with honey before I was vegan.  Now, there is a debate as to whether honey is vegan friendly or not.  Veganism means no animal products, but honey seems to be a grey area.

Anyways, what's your opinion on it? Any vegans here that eat honey?

I worked at a raw vegan cafe.

Honey was off limits.

They used Agave instead.

Honey=vegetarian,  not Vegan.

Personally, I love honey.  Much better than agave in my opinion.

I hear that pretty much all agave sold in the stores is oxidized. I personally have found all agave I've ever tried to be nasty. Apparantly it's supposed to be clear. If it's not, it's oxidized/degraded... Blue agave would be an exception, however, going by the info, the true color is probably lighter then what is sold.

Yacon root syrup is another sweetener. Has a really good reputation from what I understand.

I dunno I've enjoyed agave nectar when I've had it.

But yeah if you're a vegan I'd saying goin all up in a beehive for their precious juices is kind of contraindicated.

Being vegan sounds unnecessarily cumbersome at best and like bigotry at worst. But I wouldn't consider honey a vegan product, no. I wouldn't consider wheat a vegan product either btw; even seen a combine going through a wheat field? You're not telling me that that occurs without any loss of animal life.

I really don't even see how that's a grey area. Honey is made by animals and is therefore an animal product and is therefore not vegan. But if you want to eat it then eat it. I had tried to be pretty much vegan for a while and still ate honey just because it's good and I don't really feel sorry for the bees.

Agave? Hmm... I've never heard of that.  I'll check it out.

Yep.  I have these boots and they're vegan :smilingpuppy:

There's debates about it because bees aren't forced to make honey, that's just what they do, or whatever.  I've just been curious because I know vegans that consume honey.

harvesting honey from a beehive is necessary

especially if you're the one who built the hive.

I am vegan. Well I don't eat anything involved with animal exploitation. So I eat eggs occasionally from a friends free range rescued hens. Also eat honey sometimes from a friend who keeps bee's.

Harvesting honey also means you have to feed the bees during winter, as you took away their food stores. This usually happens by giving them sugar water, but this does not have the same chemical makeup that honey does. Honey has, for example, has antibiotic properties that could very well play a role in the bees' defense against natural enemies (esp. parasites, fungi, bacteria).

That's good, but eating eggs are like a predator stealing a bird's nest eggs in the wild, right? so they're basically meat.

That's cool, I feel it is better to be in touch with your food source and that source be sustainable.

see now im not sure if you dont know anything about beekeeping

or if i'm making up everything i know about beekeeping.

but a properly maintained hive will produce more honey than it needs for winter.

it's impossible to be a vegan unless you're willing to make your own clothes
and shoes, live in a cave and farm your own food so that you can ensure there's
no animals exploited or killed

vegan footwear

actually that's not always accurate, if you're robbing a small amount the
colony will adjust it's population  but that results in lots of dead bees
and a slower spring build up, feeding is the alternative and it's usually
done in conjunction with various products to help reduce those issues

My dad used to have bees. I've been around them for a decade or so.

I'll gladly accept that, but I don't know of any beekeepers who let the bees have enough honey to last through the winter. All I've ever seen is all honey combs being taken out and the bees being fed sugar water during winter.

So where's the bear going to live who could have lived in your cave?

Definitely not impossible.  But, it is difficult.  Look at my post with my boots, those are vegan as well.

No it's not. The eggs are not fertilized. I suggest you do a little more reading on eggs. Also that was misquoted :P
