Are you guys familiar with International phonetic alphabet? I would like to help you out, but I'm really having a hard time trying to make Latin words sound like a combination of shorter English words.
IPA is actually based on Latin, which can help you understand the way it works, essentially what you read is what you say, one symbol, one sound.
Fasciculare is actually pronounced like this: first part is like in fascism, without the last part, the next c is a K sound, the last part is as it is. But yeah, don't pronounce it like that in front of the American audience! :lol: Do it like Gravija said.
In Psilocybe, the P is not silent, and as Anatta said, there are no 'eye' sounds. 'SIGH-LOSS-i-BEE' can be a pronounciation for the chemical compound psilocybin, because that is a word borrowed into English language, but Psilocybe is still Latin, and sounds very different.

So pretty much adding pronunciations into my guide would be worthless because it ridiculously confusing and no one would get what you meant if you said it correctly?

Pretty much, yeah.
You could make a separate guide, and I would try to help you, that deals with the problem of Latin pronunciation. If someone wants to learn, then good for them! But it's mostly for them, cause if they started talking like that in front of others, they would almost certainly get the 'you're a tard!' or 'you're doing it wrong!' responses. Americans pronounce Latin like it's English, that is a fact. Even a large majority of scientists do it! They most likely don't even consider it to be a different language.  And people don't often accept willingly that you are right, and they have been wrong for years.

But really I got cha, wish it wasn't like that. Its annoying having so many ways to say stuff...
maybe ill write a guide later on, got to finish my other one first haha.

Ya Ive heard Stamets and others pronounce it the way i said, not the compound but the genus. i heard the chemical is pronounced like we normally would. Si-lo-sigh-ben . and thats how i for years said Psilocybe . Si-low-sibe

who knows. fuck it. i'll say shit how i say shit .

Great Idea for a thread Bro! I'm always saying them in my head wondering if I'm going to sound like an idiot when I say them out loud :laugh2:

I only ever say them aloud when telling my GF "it's not a Lib, it's a... and she doesn't know I'm probably butchering the name :what:

It would be cool to have an audio reference for the "standard" way most mycologists say them! Ohhh well all that matters is I think I say "Psilocybe Semilanceata" right :crazyeyes:

I found a couple of relatively good guides to Latin pronunciation and thought I'd share it with you guys. Latin is not an easy language to learn, but info in these links can give you an idea how it might sound, if you're interested in learning.

Also, if you guys want, you can compile a short list of species and I could make an audio recording of the way I pronounce them, not because it's correct, but just so you can hear what they sound like when they are not read like they are written in English. And I do have a bit of formal Latin education, albeit it was almost 8 years since I last learned it.

Man these pronunciations annoy me. I still prefer my way of saying Hygrocybe, Conocybe, Psilocybe, etc...

I mean, I always thought High-grow-sibe was the sickest sounding name ever.
