This is Communist China we're talking about here.  It's not about art.  It's about achieving a goal.  This goal is to build the tallest skyscraper in the world in the shortest amount of time possible.  That, to the normal man would seem a bit counterintuitive.

I can't believe it's a Chinese thing. America leads the trends in architecture with lego block and glass buildings full of windows that don't even open for fresh air. It's a trend that started in NYC in the 70's. WTC 1&2 were typical examples. The other big thing is having glass ceilings and walls and buildings extending over water now. And it's all without any thought to artfulness or imitating the grandiesque stone masonry of old. There's no reason they can't build a handsome steel framed sky scraper like the Empire State building.

Perhaps. It baffles me though that anyone would sign a $15,000/ month lease on an office where you can't even open a window. I know a lot of firms like to have a downtown presence but that doesn't mean they should sacrifice the little luxuries in life. If these glass window buildings wouldn't rent they'd remodel them pretty quick.
