I moved to Philly for the art scene(and school), it really does make up for the armed robbery and having to call the cops for some guy stabbed outside my house. But I also went through a phase shortly after moving here(after my naive phase where I wandered around like a lost puppy dog for a while) where I was pretty sure I was gonna die and would have panic attacks at the drop of a hat lol. I got over it eventually though.

I wouldn't slight anyone for preferring to live elsewhere though. Sometimes I need breathing room, myself. My parents live in the LV, though, I find it far more convenient living out there with a car than living in the city without one, honestly.

I lived in the poconos for over 20 years, everyone there is from the city.  :wtf:

There was a decent amount of crime going on there when I left, and my dad was just visiting me in the midwest and told me that the Poc's are in a rapid decline.  So it will either get worse or better.


Yup, everyone moving into the area is from NYC and NJ, especially since 9/11.

Crime has gotten a lot worse but it's still the mountains man. :lol: Maybe up in the bigger towns like stroudsburg, scraton, wilks..


Mind if I ask you where you lived in the poconos?

Scranton and Wilkes-Barre hardly qualify as "poconos".  I moved out a few years after 9/11 actually; you should've seen the massive influx of city folk in the early-mid 90s.

I guess Scranton and Wilkes are a stretch, you are right. :lol:

I know about the influx you speak of.. I graduated in 06, so during the 90s every year there would be more kids from NJ and NY.

I have 3 best friends from elementary school that I still talk to- one is from NYC, one NJ, the other Philly.  I was born in the midwest.  :shrug:  It seems like no one was from the Poconos before 1980.

I wasn't even born before 1980..so...

My family moved there from the NYC area, so I suppose we are apart of the great transplant influx, though I finished out highschool in the lehigh valley..which is also experiencing a rise in crime.

Still feel a million times safer walking down the street at night out there than I will ever feel walking home(in my current neighborhood, at least) in Philly.

Yeah, my sister and her husband live in the valley, they've told me that crime's getting out of hand there.  And where I'm at now the area is going through similar "growing pains", except I'm like 900 miles away.  That shit follows me.

I was born in 88..... in Florida. :rolleyes: Then my family moved back to PA.

my dad's family grew up in Carbon County their entire life besides randomly military excursions.

@pirate-blues: I recently went to the Baum School of Art in downtown Allentown and driving down the side streets I couldn't look anywhere but straight in front of me without some gangster 40 year old dude asking me whats up in a cocky manner. Maybe I stare at people IDK. :lol:

If nonviolent crimes were legalized the police would have to spend their resources on the violent crimes. That would definitely make me hate them less, cause right now they spend far too mush time chasing non-violent people, because they are afraid they might get hurt.

Have seen the police not being interested in stopping five guys from breaking down a door to beat up the people behind, and coming as soon as they get an anonymous call about a little weed.
(I was on the outside of the door, after the guys inside had attacked a party and beat up to teenage girls)

It would change a bit, I dislike cops more so because a lot of them are pricks that have a problem with authority, (the whole reason they became cops).  In NJ most cops make around $100,000 a year with overtime and its almost impossible to get the job unless you are related to or good friends with one.  A lot of them show little respect to anyone, elders included and they just do fucked up shit all the time.  Legalizing drugs will fix some of the problem with law enforcement, but they really need to do a total overhaul of the criminal justice system in this country.  I understand the job makes people jaded cause everyone is lying to you and most of the people you deal with hate you, but it is that way for a reason.

When I visited Amsterdam (before they cracked down on dry mushrooms, then mushrooms period - and obviously before this new obsession with weed-tourism the gov't of the Netherlands has been infected with) I was astonished when I realized that I could wave at the friendly police officers going by on their bicycles or their horses since they were there to *protect* me, not throw me in jail for having weed in my pocket.

The police in Amsterdam actually saved my life and the lives of my friends when a street gang tried to mug us, though that was on a trip a few years later.  If I hadn't already learned to like the cops in Holland, I certainly would've learned it then.

Seeing police and feeling relieved and happy to have them around was something completely foreign  - and simply awesome.  When people see a cop car here (in my part of the US), the default emotion is fear and the default thought is "am I doing anything illegal?  OH shit do I have a taillight out?  Does my car smell like weed or will the cigarette my friend smoked yesterday cover up the smell??" 

I also visited family in Portugal relatively recently; all drugs were decriminalized in Portugal a while back.  Walking through Lisbon at night, I was always happy to see officers whose job it was to protect me and others from violence, theft, and so on, while knowing that they didn't give a damn if I had a little hash or a spliff in my pocket.

The question as phrased by the OP I take issue with; there are non-violent crimes that cause TREMENDOUS damage to people's lives.  Since we don't have universal healthcare in the US (unless you're over 65), a crowbar to the legs might ruin you financially even worse than someone hacking your bank account, even though hacking a bank account is "non-violent".  If the OP was talking about so-called "Victimless crimes" - or, more specifically, "non-violent drug offenses" - then there is absolutely no doubt that enforcement (or lack thereof) significantly affects EVERYONE'S perception of law-enforcement (they're there to help you, not to make your life hell just 'cause they can). 

If however your definition of "non-violent crime" includes fraud/identity theft/vandalism/etc., then the premise of your question becomes rather ridiculous; the fact that I spent the time to type up a post this long is evidence that I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt (which is always a good idea on the internet { /sarcasm ))
