400w Metal Halide or T5 Flourescent Array? (Salvia Divinorum)
    #17224243 -

which do you guys find Salvia usually responds to best?

I see people with these giant leaves so what are you all using?

the two choices i mentioned are what I have available.

I have always thought they loved shade, but im curious, so let me know!

thanks everyone, and why is there no salvia subcategory anymore?

I have never grown salvia so I cant say for sure, but in my experience with growing indoors; a 400w metal halide bulb was a large improvement compared to my T5 set up. I would imagine salvia grown under the metal halide would grow better.

you get bigger leaves from less light.  they like shade, one of those gifts that are perfect under fluoro...t8 are also fine.

I have tried 400w MH (both cool and warm lamps), fluro tubes and the 130w 6400K fluro lamp, and the latter is best. HID is too intense, fluro tubes are better (see pics) but the fluro lamp is the go.

It's easier to grow outside. They survive winter and come back up in Spring. Salvia is a hardy plant.

once acclimated to your spot   i don't even want to know how much i have spent trying to import it here to have it arrive dead or starting to rot already.  once it gets hold though, look out.

it gets around 0f too often for me to like with a salvia D. plant outside?

I've been growing salvia d. indoors during the winter then transplanting outside, and I have a T5 and a T8 lamp setup.  They do well under both.  Seems to be just strong enough that you can let them get pretty close to the lamp but not too strong.

I don't have a lot of experience with other lamps though.

ill probably just leave them under the t5 array, but im turning the light off at night before the leaves seem to be turning a little purple from too much light?

purple could be cool temps as well if its cold there.

i cant say i have tried, but i dont see sally going down to 0C never mind 0F.  if you tried, i would shelter it and its roots really well.

Salvia divinorum does great down to 0 C with small bursts to -1 or -2 C being okay, but it would never take 0 F.

As I've said before, I get much better and much more aesthetically pleasing growth in the cooler months than I do during the summer when my plants nearly die from rot every year.

the soil in their natural habitat must be really well draining, which i think it is in jungles.  Not much for nutrients, but well draining.

I agree it couldn't take 0F, but it can handle months of cold and in my experience to -6C as dormant root stocks in an outside plot. The plants much be well established, i.e. over a metre in height, before the onset of winter. Their foliage simply burns off in the frosts and come Spring they're back up again ...6 years straight. I don't grow in pots. Mine grow next to a lime tree. They get morning sun only.

Half the drama Sally growers have is they moddle coddle their plants with all this spin that they're fussy tropical plants ...they're not.
