here we are still bitching about BS. I hope you passed and listened to the people w/experience.

sometimes, people who think that their realm of study means more than that... they try to exert their influence in conversations that don't really apply to them.

sometimes, when you know what the f*ck you're doing, you win, and then loose clients that used to have to worry about
Pot charges.

Enlil is pissed - he just lost a lot of easily-paying clients.

Ganja legalization in 2 states will end up killing his clietelle in the very near future.

This was bigger change than the presidency in the legal world.

Lol...I get paid the same whether I have 1 or 100 clients.  I also don't work in CO or WA.  This thread isn't about the law.  It's about whether an employer should be allowed to choose employees based on his/her own criteria.

Perhaps you could start your own thread about employers' rights that we can join in. That would be fun.:yesnod:... :farmerdance:  . . . :peace:

You seem to think that the OP is the definitive factor in determining what a thread is about.  That's simply not true.  It's a starting point.  It might be the topic of the thread...but this thread, most threads, and every good thread move beyond the original post and into other secondary and tertiary issues.

I realize that you've got a particular sensitivity to rhetoric in the pub, but the solution to that is as easy as clicking the "hide thread" icon.

You can't find out if someone golfs by having them piss in a cup.

Besides, the REAL point of this isn't whether employers should or should not be allowed to hire who they want, it's that drugs have been demonized beyond belief so that people are conditioned to hate and be scared of inanimate objects and the people who use them.

Unfortunately, you can't. Someday, however, such a test may exist.

Yeah who can't wait for the day they can do a brain probe before they hire you.  Cause NOBODY has secrets they don't want nor need to tell their employers about, right?  Secrets that have NOTHING to do with the job at hand.

Do you think a brain probe is moral?  Someone finding out your deepest darkest secrets just for you to get a job?

I think being forced to submit to any of the discussed testing is immoral.  On the other hand, I think forcing an employer to use someone else's criteria for hiring is immoral as well.

What do you mean by someone else's criteria?

Well, you believe that the question of whether someone smokes weed at home or not has no bearing on an employee's performance at work.  Someone else might believe differently.  If they do, being a weed smoker is an undesirable trait for that employer.  By not allowing them to consider that trait, you're forcing them to use only the criteria that you believe to be important in a hiring decision.

Noooooooooooooo!!  I just lost both the paragraphs I wrote!!

Alright let me try again..

I believe that if the employer finds that their employee's work is suffering due to drug use in any way, that employer should be free to fire their employee at will.  But saying "here, piss in this cup so I can find out your secrets," when you can't do that for any other trait but drug use, is wrong.  Hell, you can't even legally ask a person their age in an interview.

If you believe a brain probe is immoral, then by proxy, a piss test should be too.  They both do pretty much the same thing, they infringe on our privacy, albeit the brain probe on a larger scale.

Gah, it never sounds as good the second time..

Re: Piss test in 24 hours! [Re: Midnight_Toker]
    #17189464 -

First, it is not illegal for an employer to ask a person's age...at least not in the US.  It is a bad idea, because using age as a factor in hiring is illegal in most cases...

I agree it's immoral...I also think that people should be allowed to be immoral.  There are people who are so against drug use that they might not want to have employees that use simply because they don't want the paychecks they're writing to go to drugs.  Why should they be forced to fit your definition or my definition of morality?

As a society, we've chosen certain factors that an employer can't take into account...things like race, age, gender, etc...some states also include sexual preference in that list.  These classes are protected because of the widespread discrimination that these people have unjustly been subjected to.

Smoking weed isn't like being black.  It's a choice.  Some would say it's a reflection of one's judgment.  If an employer thinks it's relevant, why should he be forced to ignore it?

Why should he be forced to ignore age, race, sexual preference then?  It is absolutely discrimination.  It's just discrimination people agree with because they've been conditioned to.  Not unlike racism used to be.

They can be against drug users all they like, but why should it even matter what somebody does when they get home from work?  Don't ask don't tell worked great for many years before piss testing.

I can see where you are coming from and I think you see where I'm coming from.  We're more just arguing opinions that we're both allowed to have at this point.

Discrimination isn't immoral...we all discriminate based on traits we think are relevant.  I don't like cops...for no other reason than they are cops...It's discrimination.

Our society has deemed certain types of discrimination wrong and illegal.  I didn't draw the line between racial discrimination and drug use discrimination...someone else drew that line.  It seems to me that you agree that a line exists, but we just disagree on where that line should be.  For me, the line is drawn between immutable traits and intentional conduct.

Which is fair enough.  All I can say is that people should have the freedom to do what they enjoy doing so long as it does not hurt or negatively affect anybody but themselves.  If someone likes to get high after work rather than sit down, watch TV, and gorge themselves on alcohol and chips, what's the big deal?  It's two different choices that reach the same outcome - relaxation and/or feelgoods.

Imagine a world where people stayed the fuck out of other people's business.  A world where people respected freedom of choice.
