Albinism in Psilocybe cubensis?
    #17099039 -

Has anyone ever seen this before? I found one fruiting body that was completely normal in every respect with one exception: the gills were a whitish gray color.

A normal fruiting body of similar size is shown for comparison. I scratched the stipe to check for bluing and it was positive. This is definitely a cube. Is this due to a lack of pigment in the gills, or a lack of pigment in the spores, or both?

:strokebeard3:maybe a sterile fruit? :shrug:or lack of pigmentation in spores at least. Don't think it has much to do with the color of the gills themselves though.  Just my :twocents:

Ive had a spore-less strain of golden teachers whose gills were salmon pink to lavender color, with the typical auburn cap, hygrophanus upon drying, if you think you have something special do a clone and an other grow from the new substrain, if it is albinism you should have an albino in the subsequent crop. Albinism is caused by a mis-sequencing in the pairs for the pigment gene, a trait that should continue through the cloning process. Often times these mutations occur when the genes are stretched too far from genetic recombination origins, which may mean that even if you have an albino strain it may not produce well with either weight or potency, at which time such a strain is for valued novelty only. Im pretty sure there are strains of albino or mechanistic cubs out there, but it might be worth a try to see if you have a winner.

Sterility is a process that can be likened unto infinity, which is a long walk, the closer to the end you start before beginning, the more achievable  the goal of infinity becomes.  Remember, cleanliness in next to goddessness

I've had white cubes pop up before. It was weird seeing lbm's then a couple white ones pop up. Unfortunately it happened when i was a novice and had no clue of how to clone. Myc
