help me with some pronunciations? 2012 //post your questions

Hi guys, I searched and i found mr mushrooms awesome link with the sound bites of mushroom names. but that list is not that big and theres many i am interested in how to say. and im sure other people have similiar questions about species they collect. so maybe we can make this a thread for everyone to give some insight into mycological pronunciations.
i realize were not going for perfect greek or latin here . but how do the mycologists say it. its about communication not strict latin law here.
i know alot of names ive really only said in my head and not even spoke them !! haha so if i am going to say them i want to say them somewhat propper. :thumbup:

heres a few off the top of my head that i know im not saying right.

oregonensis
Pleorotus pulmanarius
zelleri
Plectania nannfeldtii
Kueneromyces lignicola
myriadophylla

Not really, that's English pronunciation.
Unfortunately I don't know how to write English pronunciation of those names, and I'm probably pronouncing quite a few wrong myself, it's been almost 10 years since I've learned Latin.

This is how I would pronounce them... not that I say them properly :shrug:

  • oregon-en-sis (just like it's written)
  • ploo-row-tuss pul(likea boat hull)-mon(jamaican man)-are-ee-us
  • zell-err-eye
  • Plec-tan-ee-ah nan-feld-ee-eye
  • Kuehner(a surname-I think its pronounced Keener)-oh-my-sees lig-nee-cola
  • Myriad-oh-file-ah

I'm trying to find a good pronunciation guide on the web, but there's really nothing that would explain it simply and thoroughly, with audio examples.
I know that it's very difficult for native English speakers to understand, but Latin is mostly pronounced as it's written, with some rules that differ from that. Mostly tough, one letter = one sound. It is very different from English in that respect.
I remember seeing one growing video, and seriously, the way the guy pronounced 'Psilocybe' made me cringe. It was something like Silo-see-bee, and proper (at least more correct) Latin of that word sounds exactly like it's written letter for sound.

A great thread would be an easy guide to pronouncing latin.
It would give simplified latin rules as well as a list of how to pronounce the popular genre of mushrooms and popular active species.
Ill look into it.

and latin with an aussie accent too, i just tried it!! :lol:

my problem is i want to say latin like one would speak spanish but it doesnt seem to fit!

Haha Got to finish my other guide first! its almost done, one more update, not sure if ill be adding microscopic features and descriptions yet... then im doing edibles of the pnw, then I think this idea of pronunciation haha I have some work ahead of me.

how about fasiciculare !!

i am retarded and crazy and agreed to do a mushroom presentation. and i have many species off by heart. but this ones bugging me. how wouold you say it!?

As a non-native English speaker, it really bugs me how English speakers habitually mangle Latin names. There should not be an "eye" in "Galerina" or a "sigh" in "Psilocybe" :frown: Latin was meant to be an international standard...

I want to add the pronunciations into my PNW Guide. I was hoping some who knows about these names could help me out, I know were not going to get a formal latin pronunciation, but if we can get pretty close that would be ideal!
