Voting.. a question (not about the presidential election)

Someone asked this question in one of the 400 other politics threads (and it got buried) and I was curious as well,

What, besides voting for the president, is at stake in this election?

How are we to find out more information about who is up for the running, and what local ballot initiatives or propositions are being voted on? I personally have no idea how to find this information. I registered online 2 weeks ago and never got anything in the e-mail and was advised to just fill out the form online and the only choices I got were president, senate, district representative. Is there anything else I should be looking into? Should I expect something regarding local elections/state propositions? Many of us here have probably never voted, but I for one am very curious in voting (after listening to Jello Biafra for so many years) and want "my voice to be heard" and all that stupid shit.

Can anyone add to this WITHOUT adding a bunch of bullshit about the presidential election, this thread is not about that. Thanks.

You should get 1. a postcard sized voter registration card 2. Voter Sample ballot -with your voting location 3. Voter information guide.

The propositions are actually waaaaayyy more interesting than the presidential race, decisions on actual issues rather than trumped up politicking. Here in california we have one deciding whether or not to abolish the death penalty (and save the state tons of money in the process) as well as whether or not to label GMO foods, among others, and a more local one asking to extend a tax paying for public libraries :awesomenod:....

Honestly the presidential elections seems fucking stupid and pointless in so many different ways but I've heard a great deal about the importance of local elections/ballot initiatives, etc.

There are major serious differences between the political parties, and a choice one way or the other will affect you -slightly- but the arguments about them are totally pointless. Most people have made up their minds already.
Talking about the death penalty- that's something you can actually have a reasonable discussion about.

Is there anywhere online I can find a site talking about the local elections, etc for my state? I found a thing online where I print out my voter form and mail it in but it only has info about the president/senate/representative and I have to write in the ballot initiatives but don't know what they are (California).

for the most part, the presidential election is pointless, it doesnt matter who you vote for it's the electoral college that elects the president, the most important of the federal elections is congress, the house and senate are the ones that draft the bills and vote on them, the president's job is minimal in that he signs the bills or vetoes them

not knowing the state you're in I cant give you a link tot he state election site which will usually have a lot more information regarding what's coming up and who's running

for instance, here's a place to find out who is running in idaho

and in indiana you'd want this site

a few more resources to help you make a better decision are these, you can
track the candidates stances on various things through their own website,
just find out what voting district your in for the federal and local
elections and only pay attention to those specific candidates
