Are you Stoners registered to vote?
    #1546204 - 05/13/03 06:36 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Well you should be. Besides the legalization issue, they are trying to tax our damn munchies!
Have you heard of the "twinkie tax"? They are claiming it is a tax to curb obesity. Well who's business is it of theirs (the gov't) who is obese and who is not? They already taxed our cig's and alcohol. The gov't does not want the working poor enjoying anything.

Yeah I love veggies, and I eat right...whatever.
But when I get stoned all I want is some chips and candy.
I should not be taxed for having a "sweet tooth".
Neither should you.

Twinkie tax 1
Twinkie Tax 2
Twinkie Tax 3

I don't think that it is the twinkies and candy that really get people fat. Its the half dozen fried egg, four thick-cut slices of ham, six ounce steak, four flapjack covered in butter and syrup, toast dipped in butter, coffee and orange juice breakfast that they have everyday. But if you were to charge a tax on those foods, they would be affecting even those who eat these foods responsibly.

This is a 'pleasure' or 'vice' tax, like on alcohol, tobacco, and gambling. Relying on the profit made from them interfers with governments ability to responsibly regulate them. It creates an opportunity for coruption, an invitation to deception, and a profit for the blackmarket.

These taxes are often the first to be raised when the government (local or federal) needs money. Ironically, bills to expand tobacco taxes cite the fact that a tax raise would get people to quit smoking. They must plan an appropriate rate as not to lose too many smokers, else risk losing money! People go to great lengths to smuggle cigarrettes and alcohol attempting to avoid taxes. Imagine, buying Twinkies from overseas just because the shipping is less than the local tax!

Its compusory to vote in Australia and it should be in the US. Its the votes of the narrow minded aging old kiddyfiddling baby boomers that put arseholes like BUSH & HOWARD in office. Its your democratic responsibility/duty to be politicaly aware and vote. I heard that less than 50% of US citizens actually vote.

I voted for the first time last week during our local elections, Labour lost seats all over the country, and it felt good to know that I had some tiny part in that.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I am registered and will be voting in the upcoming election. I've registered Green party and encourage everyone here to vote Green on the upcoming Presidential election. In 2000, they almost got enough votes to qualify for federal campaign funds and thats EXACTLY what we need... a third party to show how indifferent Democans and Republicrats are from eachother and fuck upu the two party B/S at least in the debates.

Very well pu, and I couldn't agree more! There is a fundamental, self-corroding, contradiction in concept of a "sin tax." The idea, that you don't like a certain kind of behavior, therefor you are going to tax it, and raise money from it, is a total non-sequitur, and very corrupting.

I also think that "sin taxes" are extremely unfair, and generally penalize the poor. If you tax a pack of cigarettes $2.00, which are addicting as hell to many, that tax doesn't really effect a rich person, but to a poor single parent who can barely feed their kids, that often means less food for the kids, not less cigarettes.

Sin Taxes are just wrong on so many levels!

I'm registered alright! Although I haven't gotten to vote yet seeing how I just turned 18 in December...but registering was the very first thing I did. Before even excercising my right to buy porn, it was voting! I registered Libertarian but a few weeks later got a letter saying it is no longer a "recognized political party" in my state. Its complete bullshit if you ask me but, what am I gonna do? I'm now "unaffiliated" which is fine with me. Voting is the #1 most important thing you should do. Nothing pisses me off more than people who complain about the government but don't excercise even the smallest of their rights to change it. Even if you believe that voting is worthless, as a purely symbolic act, you should excercise that right! Remember that people all over the world DIE for that right. Be thankful that you have it....and do what you can to change things you don't like. Also, the fat tax is bullshit!

so you'd rather total anarchy? I think you'd change your mind if you saw it. I agree that most of the government is bullshit...but I believe there needs to at least be some form of order. It would be nice if people could just behave civilly without laws to govern them but, unfortunately, the world doesn't work that way.

you are trying to tell me total anarchy is grand? Would it be grand when people with guns came and took all your shit...would it be grand if women were getting raped and no one stopped them....would it be grand if murder was something people could just get away with? Maybe if the world population was MUCH, MUCH smaller, it could work....but there are FUCKED UP people in this world and a lack of order would cause shit to SERIOUSLY hit the fan. I am thankful for some order in this world....no, I do not like police, no I do not agree with the war on drugs...and yes, I do believe that a lot of government is corrupt...but would I rather have anarchy? No fucking way! I vote and attend protest rallys and marches and do whatever I can to affect the aspects of government that I disagree with. Thats a start....and realize that even if you do think there should be no government, there is a very, very slim chance of that happening any time soon. At least by voting you can in however small a way play a part in who does get into power...so at least the government we do have might have a chance at improving. If kids sit around all day complianing about the war on drugs, evil George Bush, corrupt cops etc....and do nothing about it, than they are just as bad as those they critizise. If you cast your vote and your candidte doesn't win, be my guest...your complaints are welcome.

Actually...The line between total anarchy and complete government control is a thin one. In a total anarchy system, since there are no rules or laws everything would be controlled by the Strongest, most powerful person / group...how is that different?

you have a very negative view of human nature. we are born as pure beings, only corrupted by the system in which you take part in. please don't judge the capablity of humans by eliminating the force of power which imposes everything negative and immoral unto us and then say "see!! its all BAD!".. clear your mind and imagine humanity in its perfect sense... now... the reason we can't get there, is the nonexistent path towards human advancment we are choosing to follow.

Rono:

there would not be a "powerful person /group". that only exists now because you let it.

there would be no need too. human advancement would be done by all individuals... as of now, we like to "advance" by killing people, making lots of money, seizing power, and trampling the very foundation which makes us human (freedom)... now, you can "advance" either way, so, i guess its up to humanity.

Sounds good on paper, but who would co-ordinate this effort? Surely you can understand that large groups of people cannot effectively govern themselves.

Hell, even an online community like the Shroomery needs Mods and Admins to keep the peace. Unless human nature evolves spontaneously then I would say that your theory is impossible
