Atlanta,Georgia Amanita ID Help Please!

These Amanitas were found near Stone Mountain; Atlanta, Georgia:



They seemed to be in multiple patches resembling large fairy-rings.

Habitat: Under (Loplolly?)Pine and Oak trees. Mostly pine needles covering the ground.
Cap: Convex to flat. Orange/red to yellow burst from center of cap. Yellowish to white veil remnants/crusties on cap; some are more organized in ring-like designs and some appear to be totally random.
Stipe: bulbous at the base with shaggy rings on most, visible "sac" the mushroom appears to have burst out of. Mostly thick stems, tapering in toward the middle of the stem, and getting bigger closer to the cap and the base.
Gills: white, crowded,
Smell: like a mushroom :rolleyes:

I am really having a hard time distinguishing the between Formosa and Persicina. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the two?

Your muscaria is var. guessowii :thumbup:

There are a few subtle differences including the shape/distribution of the warts on the cap. Persicina tends to have tannish smears of material whereas guessowii tends to have whiter/cream-colored bumpier warts. The stems will also be slightly shaggier in var. guessowii and the ring on the stem is hardier and longer lasting. In persicina the ring on the stem and the rings near the base of the stem love to disappear at the slightest provocation whereas they are more defined and longer lasting in guessowii. I will try to point some other difference out a bit later.

The other possibility is Amanita Frostiana. They lack the rings on the bulb and have a smoother stipe. I've been finding mixed patches of Frostiana's and Guessowii. The only guessowii I see in there is the one in the center of pic 4 and maybe the one to the right of it.

A. frostiana is smaller, more slender, has a bright white bulb at the base of the stem (none of the OP's do), and has yellow warts on the cap.

Why no concentric rings? As you can see, by me in NY it's very apparent.
