Amanita id.
    #3183703 - 09/26/04 09:51 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Found this while walking through the woods today on the edge of a trail. Trees around were some pine trees and some others but not real sure what they were. Iv found formosa in the same vicinity as I found this one (only about 30 yards away) but Iv never seen one this color so Im not real sure. The cap goes from an off white at the edge, to a more yellowish color. Every other aspect of this shrooms tells me what I want to know, except the color. Help me out. Spore print was white. Here are some pics.

It could be one of the deadly Amanitas see as it looks all white. No way in hell I'd eat that thing.

Wait for ToxicMan for an ID on this one, he knows his Amanitas pretty well.

A very interesting specimen. The volva looks like a typical Amanita muscaria volva. There is a variety, A. muscaria var. alba which is all white, and your mushroom is a possibility for that.

Before I'd commit to an ID like that I'd want to do a few basic checks like to see if the spores are amyloid.

Does it have a distinctive odor or bruise?

Happy mushrooming!

See thats what I thought as well. Everything except the color was telling me muscaria. There is no smell, and as far as I can tell no apparent bruising. And I have no idea if the spores are amyloid. It was found in NC if that helps any. I dont think I mentioned that in my last post.

Checking spores to see if they're amyloid requires obtaining a spore print, then putting Meltzer's Solution (or Iodine) on them. Tincture of Iodine can be purchased in the first aid area of most grocery stores. Or go to a drug store - they should have it.

A positive test for amyloid is a deep blue color. A negative test is a reddish or brownish color. There are also spores that produce a reaction called pseudoamyloid. Several species of Lepiota do this. It is a definite color change to a purplish color. Testing spores for amyloid is best done with a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!
