Help with Amanita ID
    #3094330 - 09/05/04 09:38 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

While working the other day I spotted a couple supsicous looking mushrooms... After closer examination I believe they are a member of the Amanita family... though more then that I can't say for certain. They were found growing under and around pine trees in central new hampshire. They are golden in color with a thick white stipe... The base is rather large but not as 'bulbous' as I would have expected. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most of them, look like Amanita Pantherina. Specially the ones at the bottom right of pic No.1

The one (or2) with a light orange tan could be Amanita Virosa or one of the other cousins of the red capped ,Amanita muscaria.

I wouldn't eat those. Go hunt some red ones!

Good luck!

Thanks for the help... Wether or not it is a positive ID it's always nice to learn more about different types of mushroom. However I live on the east coast - I do not believe the red type grow on this side of the country (it would make things much easier...) Though I have yet to find one apparently Amanita Var. Formosa is what I am seeking - and they have a golden/yellow cap.

They're Amanitas, but we need to see the base of the stem in detail to try and confirm an ID. In general, there are a bunch of Amanita species with caps of the approximate color of your specimens.

None of them resemble Amanita virosa, which is an entirely white mushroom with a membranous, saccate volva. Sterile, you must have mistyped what you meant.

Happy mushrooming!
