Amanita ID help

Hello, I am a realitve newbie to 'shroomin. Today I went looking for mushrooms in my back yard, I didn't find any psilocybes but I did find 2 Amanitas. I belive that the are Amanita cothurnata, but I am not 100% sure. I have not done a spore print because the other mushroom that it may be(Amanita phalloides) has the same color spores- wouldnt help me out much.

Here are the conditions that I found the Amanitas growing in: Both were found in a wooded area. It had rained the night before. I found them within 6 feet of each other, under a large Oak tree. They appeared to be growing right out of the ground, no apparent dung or anything like that.

The 2 big ones are the ones i need and ID on... smaller ones arent that important





Both have yellow specks on the top, and did not have a volva(like A. phalloides) when I found them. If indeed these are Amanita cothurnata, is this species active? Erowid has them listed under Amanitas, but does not mention anything about their psychoactive properties.

According to Arora (MD p. 280), "A. corthunata is a slender eastern species with a whitish cap that is often tinged yellowish or brown at the center . . . Some amanitologists consider A. corthunata to be a variety of A. pantherina."

But man, those pics look sickly deadly green like Phalloides. Maybe that's just my monitor or your camera shifting the color, but I would NOT eat those for a million bucks! The volvas appear to have been lost or damaged in picking, but the annulus resembles that of phalloides more than the pantherina group.

Oh yeah, the little orange one looks like some kind of Cortinarius. The teensy white ones are probably Mycena, but could also be something in Marasmius, Collybia, or Xeromphalina--a closeup of the gills would help. (None of these are worth eating).

Ehhh... when i look at them i see no green whatsoever, its all brown with some bright yellow spots. is there any kind of test i can do to tell if its the death cap, other than eating it and seeing if my liver fails?

I seriously would not eat those. This is exactly how people get very poisoned. Of course, I don't know what those are - they look like part of the Amanita family. As far as I'm concerned the only safe Amanita to eat is Amanita Muscaria - white stem, red cap, white knobs in pine forests - and even that one only a very little at a time. Be safe, stick to Psilocybes is my opinion.

If you eat those, you're crazy. I can't say personally weither they're poison or not because I don't know but I guess that it's highly likley.

I tossed the shrooms out last night, not taking any chances with the Amanitas, unless i am 100% sure. Even then, I won't be eating Amanitas unless its A. muscaira(sp?)... too risky.

Bahh! The mushrooms that i posted were Amanita cothurnata... i went camping last night a found about 7 Death caps, they look alot different than A.cothurnata, more brown and have a smoother texture, also have a volva. Still, thanks for your help wombat and Woodsman... BTW.. dont worry about me eating those caps, the bugs in the yard ate them all up :)

Well I USED to eat the delicious Coccoras (A. calyptrata) until death caps started appearing regularly in the same areas. The golden brown variety is pretty distinctive, it USUALLY has a large unbroken patch of universal veil remaining on the cap and the young "eggs" grow pointy-end down (phalloides eggs grow pointy-end up). But the greenish-brown form looks WAY too close to death caps for comfort, & there have been some fatalities over the past few years where pickers were gathering mostly calyptrata but got one or two phalloides mixed in.

Calyptrata typically grows with Madrone while phalloides favors oak, but in southern Oregon the two trees often occur in mixed stands so you can't really tell which shrooms are growing with which trees.
