Anyone Here Surf? (Tips Welcome)

Old guy here that has wanted to learn to surf for years as I grew up skating/skateboarding/bmx racing. I bought a used board today (BicSurf 8.4) and a new wetsuit (O'Neil 4-3). Getting the old wax off today, using the "Pickle" to clean and going out next weekend. Any comments and or tips appreciated :smile:

I'm an expert snowboarder, but I found surfing to be difficult, even on a long-board. The upper arm strength required to paddle in to a wave is far more difficult and strenuous than I anticipated, being a snowboarder and all and not having to use my upper body at all except to balance when snowboarding. I also found it hard to paddle in to a wave as well as then stand and balance on the surfboard and ride the wave. The sequence of events proved to be too much for me the one time I took surfing lessons in Hawaii, and I never ended up standing up on the board for a wave. I'm also a pretty good wakeboarder, and found surfing to be far more difficult than wakeboarding, as well.

I have bodyboarded for 15 years now and watersports in waves are the best in the world

do you know what kind of board it is?? measurements???

first you want to familiarize with paddling around in your board in flat or small wave conditions, a pool or pond its ok altough it might be a bit embarassing!!!

you want to learn to duckdive so you can pass the white wash, also be careful with other surfers!!! dont drop in on them!!! that means to catch a wave with somebody already surfing on it as you will get in their wave and there could be an accident or its a way to get in a fight.

there must be many surf tutorials in youtube!

I have been snowboarding a few times and picked it right up, but if it's way harder, ergg. I am 6'1 200 and have good upper body strength but we will see. The guy at the shop told me with the type of sports I have done and the shape I'm in he said no need for lessons, you will end up on the thing in a few runs. He also told me about the etiquette and such and I have watched YouTube videos of the beach we are 20 mins from and I have gone down and watched. I plan to surf in the off season like Sept till the end of Oct and that’s it, way too cold here.

What a great investment! You are sure to have a lot of fun in the water. When you say 8.4, do you mean 8'4"? That is a good sized board to learn on. I've been surfing for about 12 years and got addicted to it after my first wave! If you have skateboarding experience, then it shouldn't be too difficult for you to learn. Just keep practicing!

Definitely check out some tutorials on you-tube. When paddling on longboards, I like to make sure that my toes touch the tail end of the board. This way i'm not too forward or too far back on the board.

The pop-up can be the most difficult part for beginners. You want to make sure that you do it in one motion. Check out how this guy does it.

Oh and that looks like a really fun wave Airdog!

Few things. Paddling will be 10x harder than you imagine it will be. Dont let that be the reason you give up. Especially paddling in a 4.3 wetsuit, thats pretty thick. Airdog has some good points. Read up on surfing etiquette, its very important. You arent going to be duck diving an 8 foot board though, maybe you should try to turtle roll.

For sure though, once you get on your first good wave and get some face time down the line, your life will never be the same.

I hope you do end up picking it up after just a few runs and end up standing up on the board and surfing your first wave on the first day :thumbup:

If you have good upper body strength, then that's definitely a plus. I didn't find surfing to be at all similar to snowboarding, so I can't say that being good at snowboarding should make it easy to get going with surfing (especially with my personal experience). But maybe you will have an easier time than I did and maybe you will have what it takes to surf. I'm sure if I tried to surf again I could eventually get it and learn to surf, but having only tried to surf once in my life, I have had very little chance to learn to surf. I live within a half hour of the beaches of Malibu and Santa Monica so I should maybe get a surfboard and get working on learning to surf. The beaches are a lot closer to me than the mountains where I snowboard, so it'd be worth learning a sport that I can do fairly close to where I live on a regular basis.

Right now we are trying to get all of the old wax off (it was a rental surfboard). My wife is out there hammering on it and I told her not to, all I am worried about is getting it hung from the rafters in my garage. Using a scraper and the "pickle", any suggestions later on especially if I buy a new one to make this easier?

If you mean easier to take the wax off, you should heat it. Leave it out in the sun for a little or take a blow dryer to it, it'll come right up.

I have heard that and I know that will happen if I land it. Next challenge will be to skydive but man that one is way off my scale but I want to before I go see happy Jesus :smile:

Yeah, just scrape it the best you can with the comb than use the pickle to get all the little bits left.

yeah i think it will be much easier learing on that longboard!! i tought you had a shortboard!

btw I live 30 min drive to an awesome spot and we are in season right now!!! thera has been insane waves sometimes in this 4 month period, some big days!!!
also there is a 1st class big wave spot (20+ feet) just 15 minutes walking south from the other spot

the ocean spits some really good shit around here as you will see:

from last weekend:
here its my best sequence of the day!!! the wave closed I didnt made the barrel and it was a big beating after that but it was all worth

Hell yeah airdog, Those are some beautiful barrels!
Mexico is my favorite surfing destination. The surfers there are so chill, unlike for example Hawaii where the locals will stick their noses up at you. 'been far to long but whenever I go out there its a party on the water
