So many people only know the Beach Boys as "that band that did surfin' usa" which is such a travesty. The Beach Boys were one of the first truly psychedelic rock bands and I hear so much of them in the best music coming out today. Animal Collective and Panda Bear in particular really remind of the Beach Boys.

One of them must have known how to surf.. because they mention some really obscure south american surf spots in their songs

I'm sure some of them were surfers but I don't think they ever considered themselves as being "a surf band." Pet Sounds doesn't really have anything to do with surfing and that is THE Beach Boys album to end all Beach Boys albums. If anything there is just a constant water/marina theme moreso than surfing theme. If you listen to brian Wilson's SMiLE water is all over that too.

If you ever want to see an awesome surf documentary check out Riding Giants, it's a documentary about the history of Big Wave riding and it's extremely well done with some fucking wild footage.

10 footers can be deadly if it's walled up.
When I was first learning in HB I was a little too cocky.. All I read on the report was that there were 6-8 footers one day.. didn't bother to read that they were unsurfable walls just one after another. I should have realized something when there were few other people out that day.
I paddled way out past 4 boogie boarders.. gave em a nod as I passed by... and I couldn't even make it out to the lineup. It was just massive walls of whitewater. I got pounded twice, both keeping me under the entire time.. When you're under that long you get a little panicky and I thought I might drown after about 10 seconds under.. pulling on the leash to climb to the top wasn't going to get me up with all the force... I had to swim to the ocean floor, squat, and shoot myself up like fuckin superman to get air.
I made it back to shore and was so beaten down I was crawling on my hands and knees and dry heaving. I noticed the paramedics rolling up on the sand and running towards me. I thought maybe someone saw me out there thinking I was drowning.
As the rushed up to me I was getting ready to tell them I was ok when they just zoomed right past me back in the water.
I looked back and saw a few boogie boards floating around with no riders.
I stuck around for a few minutes to watch the paramedics retrieve the bodies of the 4 boogie borders that I had passed on the way out. They tried to revive them.. don't know if they did it or not.
By the time I decided to leave ONE of them had started coughing up water.. the rest ust laid there unconciouss.
It was really stupid of me to go out that day.
And those waves must have been only 6-7 feet max. I can't imagine how terrifying it must be to wipe out at Mavericks or Hawaii.

Yeah I've never surfed before.. always boogie boarding.. and I don't have any experience with west coast style waves that are like fucking skyscrapers from what I've seen. But I've ridden some 6-10 ft waves that scared the shit out of me and I thought I was gonna die several times. You're right.. when you get pounded down and are basically being forced underwater by relentless waves that is some scary ass shit. The ocean doesn't fuck around.
Then I see these crazy fuckers riding like 75 foot tall waves and my jaw just drops. That's some serious skill... and balls of titanium.

At the end of Riding Giants they show these crazy surfers who go out into the middle of the pacific ocean looking for humongous waves that never come close to shore. They attach their surfboards to the backs of jet skis and the jet skis sling shot them into these fucking 50+foot tall waves. It's insane.

Yea Laird invented that shit. There's just no way humanly possible to catch some of those suckers.
You've seen riding giants so you know what a 50 foot wave looks like.
Remember 2-3 years ago there was this cruise ship in the carribean that got hit my a freak storm and was getting pounded with 80 FOOT WAVES?
A couple years ago some dude got the world record for largest wave ever ridden. I think it was about 80 feet... I'll see if i can dig up a link or picture or something
