I've talked to this guy who is almost retired and has been working with addicts and mental health patients for 40 or so years.  He's a pretty far out dude.  Said he's going to retire soon because it's complete madness working with these people every day. 

I think depending on the doctor or counselor and how sensitive they are, they might adapt somewhat to the madness they work with.  The problems become more a part of their lives rather than the solely the patients.

It's called professional burnout. Actually, psychiatrists and dentists have the highest suicide rates among professionals. Suicide can be a result of the hopelessness experienced in many mental disorders, but all by itself, it does not necessarily mean a mental disorder. There are existential crises of meaning, and there are what Dr. Stan Grof calls "spiritual emergencies," which may result in suicidal ideation. Some mental health professional do go into therapeutic work to meet their own needs through the therapeutic relationship. Unfortunately, there is no prerequisite in psychiatry, psychology, mental health counseling, clinical social work, psychiatric nursing, art therapy, or marriage and family therapists to undergo psychotherapy or analysis, before one is allowed to practice. Only if one wants to train in the Freudian or Jungian schools is analysis mandatory, and these are specialties. There are lots of flakey mental health professionals in all of the disciplines I named (which all require licensing and/or certifications).

I have worked as a mental health professional for pay, since 1982. Fortunately, I have had two month summer vacations for 26 of those years, and I have been able to control burnout. Plus, typologically, I am a thinking type not a feeling type (according to the MBTI), and so I do not get into the emotional pain with my clients. I am empathetic, but there are limitations to empathy in that one must be able to balance compassion with detachment, in order to act wisely and with discrimination. Clients have friends to cry with them. Clinical counselors need to remain clear-minded in order to help. For myself, this field of work meets the Buddhist criteria for 'Right Livelihood.' It allows for the practice of compassion for the cultivation of higher consciousness more than as a career in self-destructive emotionality. Another way of looking at it is as a "secular ministry," which is what the great counseling psychologist Carl Rogers did essentially when he left the ministry.

I once applied to work with the criminally insane in South Florida, but I did not get hired there. Maybe someone was looking out for me. There was always a guard outside the therapy door, and neck ties were not allowed to be worn by therapists, for obvious reasons. I've worked with adolescents instead, and developmentally, they're all crazy.

This is something that I am worried about myself, but I would rather help others and end up crazy myself then not go through with what I feel I must.

i've looked into psych careers.  i'm sure some of it has to do with my immense thirst for knowledge of how the brain works, and i'm sure a few things i would learn could end up applying to me.

but anyway, the main reason i'd ever want to me a MHP would be from the satisfaction i get from helping people.  someone that is truly in need of guidance, and being able to really help them.. that would mean a lot to me.  unfortunately by the sounds of it, it isn't nearly as easy as just sayin' "feel better, mannn!"

i'd probably retire before suicide though :crazy2:
