Humidity nightmare - advice needed
    #1669108 -

I have an 18 gallon terrarium with an ultrasonic running 24/7.

This little baby arrived yesterday:

(It?s great, btw!)

Problem is, as soon as my humidity stabilizes at 95%, I get water drops from hell all over the tops of my cakes. Fanning doesn?t seem to help. The only way to get the drops to go away a bit is to lower the RH to 85%. I?m stuck. Any suggestions?

I don?t want to go with a smaller terrarium because I need the space for upcoming birthdays.

Running an ultrasonic 24/7 is too much. Try putting it on a timer that lets it run for a minute or so once every few hours.

When my friend had a similiar problem, he raised one end of the terrarium. The water drops will run downhill instead of raining down onto your hard work.

Putting a warm light near the top of the terrarium may also help. The warmer surface keeps water from condensing there, so it chooses the cooler sides instead... where again it runs downhill instead of raining. Be careful that your temps inside don't get too warm if you decide to try this one.

Good luck.

You need a COOL MIST, not an Ultrasonic! Cool mists don't put out as much humidity and definatly never cause water dripping. Since they don't put out as much humidity you can run them a lot more, which enables great air exchange without needing to fan. It kills two birds with one stone and does a great job of it. This link explains it all.

The CM would solve all of the problems you're currently having, everything.

Yeah, sounds like CM is definitely the way to go.

Vasoline on the roof of your terrarium could do the trick, provided it's a drip problem you're experiencing, and not water beading directly on your cakes. If you're fruiting cakes only, my hog's reccomendation is to return that humidifier and just use perlite: it's cheap, relatively maintenance-free, and keeps the humidity at 95-100% without large droplets that cause condensation everywhere. Couple that with two long flat fishtank bubblers (credits to Magash for this one) under your perlite, and you've got air circulation that can run 24/7 while keeping your RH where you want it.

Then you don't get the air exchange Benji, Cubensis needs regular air exchange to eliminate co2 buildup. An ultrasonic can't provide that, you have to resort to fanning which is less effective and brings contams into the terrerium. Why not just spend $25 and get a cool mist which does everything automated and at a high precise level?

Hillbilly that's way to much work and way to much of a mess. Perlite is disgustingly messy. The cool mist does all that and is much easier with less maintence involved.
