Yeah I dont wanna stretch it and lose the quality either so I just end up dealing with the annoying black bars.

The physical dimensions of a movie screen are 2.35:1.  So the only way a theater production differs from this ratio, is if its somehow cropped.

To make a theater production "fit" on a widescreen TV, they will typically crop it, or add black bars across the top and bottom.

The thing about the black bars that bugs me the most though is that they are a burn in risk for my plasma

For burn in to occur, the pixel must be using some colour. Black bars are no colour=no burn in.

Doesn't detract from the fact letterboxes are annoying as fuck. I strech everything to 16:9. Old broadcast telly can go fuck itself and go wiiide.

Do you even stretch it when watching blu ray?  See I tried that and while its still good quality I cant help but switch it back to normal because I feel like whats the point in having a 1080p tv and buying blu rays when its gonna end up looking the same quality as an up converted dvd.  I just realy hate letterboxing, I got that return of the king blu ray which I was realy looking forward to watching in 1080p and I pop it in and its letterboxed too and I havent even watched it now because that taints the enjoyment factor for me big time (good thing the blu ray was only 6$ at disc replay or Id be a bit pissed).  Another thing that is pretty shady is that while some blu rays list the aspect ratio on the back so you can decide or not if you realy wanna spend your money on a letterboxed blu ray I have found that after looking alot do not and if they do they are hiding it somewhere that I didnt see it.  I dont ever wanna own another blu ray in letterbox and now that I know what apsect ratios to lookout for I have been looking at the back of the box in the store only to find 50% or more dont even list it.

Blu-ray provides a much greater resolution relative to DVD regardless of whether the movie is letterboxed or not.  Perception of quality is directly related to viewing distance and screen size.  Once you get to about a 50" there is a very noticeable difference in quality IMO.  However, I'd say if you can't tell, then don't worry about it and go for DVD.

I would think that regardless of whether its DVD or blu-ray, the letterboxing (or lackthereof) would be the same, but perhaps I'm mistaken.
