Blu - Ray

Ok, what the hell? Aren't DVD's still the new thing? I may sound like an old fart, but fuck that, i'm 21 years old. I don't want to have buy all the movies i have again on another format RIGHT AFTER i bought them on DVD. I don't even have all the ones i want on DVD!

I wish it was like Beta and VHS, but it does seem like Blue Ray has MUCH more storage capacity than DVD's, with 25 gigs one a single layer disk... but come on! I'm just now getting a good collection of movies going, does this mean in 5 years i won't even be able to play em cause i can't buy a good DVD player, cause they don't sell em anymore? ...shit.

Techonology is a wonderful thing, but in a consumer society, you gotta have a chance for the consumer to enjoy what he purchases before expecting him to buy something else better.

I would imagine that when a machine for playing the newest disc-type comes out, it will be able to play "old" DVDs as well; just like how DVD players today can play CDs.

Fuck Blu-ray.

I think it'll be at least 5+ years until either BluRay or HDDVD take the cake for next-gen; if either of them do.

I really think it'll be hard to get people to convert from DVD because unlike VHS to DVD, there is no tangible media change. It's still just a disc that looks basically the same. Unlike VHS to DVD which was a huge step in terms of everything really, size, quality, etc.

And I think many people just recently switched to DVD and will probably be pissed to switch to yet another new format which doesnt have a whole lot of advantages besides a clearer picture, that, unless you have an HDTV you really wont notice or be able to take advantage of (I'm assuming).

Blu-ray will be backwards compatible with regular DVDs.

Either way it'll be a while until we see who wins the format war b/w HDDVD and BluRay. I imagine that if BluRay can be backwards compatible then so can HDDVD. I dont remember what the differences between the two are...I dont really care, I wont be buying either of them until one of htem is phased out by the other for whatever reason.

So I wouldnt worry about it.

bluray discs will play only in bluray players.

HDDVD discs will play in dvd players at DVD quality

People will buy HDDVD discs for their collection, and play them in their DVD players until the price of the HDDVD players drop in price.

Sony will, as history has shown, lose.

Yeah, they wouldn't be THAT pigheaded to leave us DVD lovers in the dust after only 10 years.

Can you believe that? It's only been 10 years, since 1997, that DVD's came out. Still seems new and fresh and MUCH better than VHS, instead of "an old timer", like they want us to think.

Nah, DVD's are almost to the point of needing no more, the resolution is great, the playback and subtitles are at a touch of a finger. The only player i'm going to buy next is a holographic interface, cause frankly any more resolution on a 2D screen is just not needed, unless you really like seeing the hairs coming out of the pores on the nose of your favorite actor.

and morphius, i think the difference is only 5 - 10 gigs

5 for single layer HDDVD Vs Blu Ray
10 for double layer HDDVD Vs Blu Ray

...certianly not enough for me to go spend gobs of money on the newest fad to find out that it's basically the same as what i had before.

With DVD's and VHS there was a BIG difference, quality, interactivity, bonus material... and quality. That was the main thing that shut out VHS almost over night. There is not a difference between quality, HDDVD and Blu Ray both play the same thing, High Definition Video, Blu Ray can just hold 4 more hours of the director blabbing about the movie than HDDVD's.

Im still confused on all this. Ive googled a little and all that I can figure out is that newer dvd players should be able to read old and new dvd verions, and there should be Duo/Dual HD players so that one dvd player can read them all.
And to me it seems that all tvs manufactured as of now will be made with HD capability.

So now, what I cant seem to understand, is the difference between HD-dvds and Blue-Ray discs? Is it purely how much information they can hold? Can they both be read at the same speeds? Do the resultant outputs of both forms have the same quality?
If Im buying some new movies, and I plan on having a new tv in the coming months or years, and I can get a player which plays both, which do I buy: HD-DVD or Blue Ray Disc?

DVD isn't dying.

Any Blu-Ray player will play DVD.
