DVD Player and .avi's

Alright I've got a DVD player that will play .avi files burned onto regular CD's. However it will only play certain movies. I've downloaded a few movies now and 2 out of 5 have worked on the DVD player. Does anybody know why this would be and how to make the other .avi files play on my DVD player? Thanks.

Might have something to do with codecs perhaps? I'm not sure. I know my media player will only play certain avi files, while other request me to download a new codec to be able to play it. I have no idea how you would get new codecs on a DVD player (if that is even the problem) - my DVD player is all old and lame. Half the DVD's I try to play don't even work.

Many DVD players that play avi will only play DivX version of it. I have a player that will play DivX and some XVid.

My player accepts most codecs, but not all. You have to re-code them as you know. I usually just recode non-working codecs into VCD, but you could recode them into other DIVX/XVID if you research it.
BTW what player do you have? I have Phillips DVP 642

yes, as per above.
Defiently try burning movies in DivX quality or even with XVid.

I don't know if you have an xbox or would consider getting one, but those can be easily softmodded (software patch type thing) in order to play backup games and run an amazing piece of software called xbox media center. This is basically a BAD ASS version of windows media center, and it plays practically every audio and video file there is. You can also stream movies directly from your pc so you don't even have to waste blank cd's or dvd's if you don't want. Oh and they also ported milkdrop to xbmc so you can listen to music and see milkdrop visualizations on your tv. Oh and it obviously plays DVD movies. Anyways, just something to think about...it was the best $150 I ever spent and I'm sure you can find them cheaper used especially with the release of xbox360.

burn the files as VCDs or SVCDs and your player should play them.
might require some conversion, to get the files into a VCD format (i know nero can burn mpegs to vcd)

Nerovision is the shit
Any codec of avi's or any mpegs can be made into DVDs (if yo have a burner) If not, you can make SVCDs or VCDs.. (annoying becuase you ahve to chop them in half sometimes)

Alright well I don't have a DVD burner, I'm just burning them onto regular 700mb data CD's. How would I go about converting .avi files into VCD or DivX/Xvid format .avi's? The ones that have played were DivX/Xvid .avi files.

Alright I've got a program that converts avi's into vcd or svcd format. Which format will play on my dvd player burned onto a normal CD?

If it's 700mb or under I just burn it to as a VCD with Nero.. horrible quality though.
