1080P upconversion DVD Players. What is "upconversion" exactly?
    #12821979 -

So, i need a new inexpensive DVD player. We do not do the Blu Ray thing, but it would be a nice option for the future. Since we have 200+ DVD's, i was thinking one of these "upconversion" players may be nice, but i can't find exactly what upconversion means or does in relation to a standard DVD. We do have a 1080p HDTV. Sounds like if you use a HDMI cable you will get a crisper picture, not Blu Ray quality, but better.

I'm looking at something like this. Model doesn't matter, just function.

I'm just technology deficient and am not certain on terms and whatnot.

Thanks!!!

Upconversion is  a gimmick, designed to get your money.  It will NOT have better quality than a normal DVD, although the aspect ratio might be better.

Just as a computer cannot take a burry image and make it crisp (no matter what CSI has told you) it can't take a good moving image and make it better.  It can run it through filters and hopefully make it SEEM better, but there is a loss of information, not a gain.

this is not always true.

via Wikipedia:
Depending on the quality of the scaling that is done within the upscaling/upconverting DVD player, the resultant output quality of the video displayed may or may not be improved. The idea behind upconverting DVD players is that when a DVD player is connected to an HDTV, especially one of the fixed pixel display type such as LCD, Plasma display, or DLP and LCoS projection TV, scaling happens anyway, either inside the player or inside the TV. By performing the scaling closer to the source inside the DVD player, the video scaler gets to work with the original signal without the concern of transmission error or interference. There exist independent benchmark tests[1]  verifying that some upconverting DVD players do produce better video quality. However, under no circumstances will an upscaling/upconverting DVD player provide "high-definition content", since video information can only be retained or lost in each successive conversion step, but not created.

bluray players will upconvert standard definition dvds in addition to playing bluray discs.

bluray players are getting really cheap nowadays too..

Woo, you got me.  Sometimes computers can take a pixelated  image and make it blurry instead.  Nothing that you couldn't already accomplish by squinting your eyes.

I have yet to see anything that has come close to making an image higher quality.

Thanks, that upconversion did sound gimmicky. So, in theory, could i just buy a cheap Blu Ray player, and it will be an "upconverter", along with playing Blu Ray? Like i say, we won't do Blu Ray now, but we may in the future and  maybe rebuy a few faves down the line. I just want to max out our HDTV's potential.

Thanks guys.

I have two Sony DVD players that I bought at the same time a few years ago.

One of them outputs though YPbPr, the other has a HDMI Upscaler.

When connected to the TV, playing the same DVD, the more expensive HDMI model is noticeably better quality

They might be a bit gimmicky, but they are doing something other than a simple stretch-and-blur, they're optimized for resizing movies in a way that your TV won't be doing when it's showing an SDTV signal.

But then again, it isn't that big a difference, it doesn't even begin to compare with a BluRay player.

Upconversion is definitely not a gimmick.  I've got a PS3 and a Sony 5-disc DVD upconversion with HDMI.  While the PS3 looks noticeably better, the 5-disc is not far behind.

My recommendation is buy a cheaper Blu-ray and it will upconvert.

I believe that's what i'm going to do.

Hye guys unrelated, but i think one of you may be able to help. On our PS2, we just have the AV cords, i never got around to getting a S-video cable. What exactly do i want? You can get them for less than $5 on ebay.

Does it need the s-video on one end, and the AV jacks on the other end? As in, the s-video side connects to the PS2, and the AV jacks plug in like normal. I'm confused......Could someone link me a pic? Like this...

That's what i want, correct? We have a sound system we hook the audio to, if that matters.

Thank you guys again for the help!

The S-video is the video signal.  The red and white are the audio.  Hook up the S-video, red and white cables.  The yellow is also video but shittier quality compared to s-video.

Not a gimmick.  I use a denon receiver that has audio and video inputs.  It will convert any input to 1080p and the result is beyond merely just noticeable, it looks fantastic.  That said I researched good video processing chips before deciding on a receiver.  It's no bluray but damn worth it.

For the ps2 you might as well go component, better quality than s video

Please elaborate, on both subjects, if you don't mind.....

Your TV automatically "upconverts" any signal to fit its aspect ratio anyway.

Even with fancy "upconversion" algorithms, the benefits of "upconversion" are minimal.

As someone else said, it's rather difficult to magically add resolution to a source image.

I don't think you should be spending the money on a bluray player if you're only going to run it through an S-Video cable.

No, if i got the blu ray i'd use an HDMI. I'm talking about S-video in regards to hooking up a PS2. I kinda jacked my own thread for a minute!

Oh! I got lost with all the nested quotes....

In that case, have you thought about a PS3 as a blu-ray player? I know a lot of the PS1 and PS2 catalog is backwards compatible and I think the PS3 can output 1080p.
