Why does 1080p/1080i HD look poor on tv shows but awesome on blu ray?

I dont understand why this is, if the resolution is 1080p then why should it differ so much in quality?  Sometimes even my DVDs look more like HD than certain shows in HD which doesnt make much sense to me.  Alot of people will probably say its because no tv providers realy broadcast in full 1080p all the time but my tv shows on the info whether the channel is 1080 or 720 so that cant be it.  One other pet peeve is shitty blu ray transfers. There are some blu rays out there that look absolutely no different than the dvd version, one example that realy points this out is trainspotting.

I already had it on dvd but it was like 8$ at best buy on blu ray so I decided to grab it.  To my dismay it looks pretty much identical but the most annoying thing is that there is still annoying fuzz and blips in the picture quite frequently, Im sorry but that shit is not supposed to be on blu ray, I have dvds that look better.  Another one is the sopranos set, I bought it on dvd a couple of months ago and was thinking I should of just shelled out the big money for the blu ray version because its my favorite show ever and i wanted the best version but borrowed my friends seasons of it thats on blu ray and it looks pretty much identical was well.

Compression if you're comparing to TV broadcast (unless using an antenna)
Transfer if you're comparing quality between different Blu Rays.

As far as I knew there is no 1080p broadcast currently, only 1080i and 720p.

There are 1080p broadcasts but they look like shit.  The compression ratios needed to pump a 1080p signal to someone's house take away any PQ benefits.
Add to that that almost no one is set up to properly view 1080p in their home.  There's a shocking lack of understanding in that regard.

Yeah my bad I think thats correct cuz I just scrolled thru some channels and the 1080 ones all said 1080i on the info.  Ok one other thing im curious about is why does a 720p appear to look better than a 1080i resolution to me?  Ive noticed it more than once actualy.

1080i and 720p are virtually analogous in perceived picture quality, though the native progressive format should perform slightly better with fast-moving images.  Any difference you see is a difference in the compression ratios and source material quality, and possibly placebo.
