So Blu Ray is 1080p, what's a regular DVD at?

Just wondering, and i cant find any answers. We are thinking about getting some of our trip movies in Blu Ray, seeing as we have a 1080P TV. Does anyone know what pixel they are at? Aren't SDTV's just 480P?

Our reg DVD's look 3d while we trip, i can only imagine what Blu Ray looks like!

Yeah Blu-Ray is a HUGE, HUGE difference. It's like 6 times the resolution, and the audio is waaaaay better too.

It will also depend quite a bit on screen size and viewing distance. The chart below estimates both, and calculates the interactions between resolution, distance, and screen size.

Interestingly, it indicates that at about 15ft, you can't even tell the difference between DVD and blu-ray unless your TV is bigger than 40 inches.

Whats the audio rate on a blu-ray?? The audio on a DVD is 192k...I can't see how it can get much better than that unless something besides the sample rate is changed.

I don't think standard DVD's come encoded in 7.1 sound.

This would result in a better audio experience, but IMO it takes a pretty high-end system and room setup to really get an advantage over 5.1

I could be mistaken about that - I just download stuff, and my downloaded 1080p files have WAY better audio quality than my lower quality downloads, but thats probably more due to compression than anything if what you say is true.

bluray audio is uncompressed (aka lossless). most discs will support either DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD.

You forgot to mention PCM lossless. But remember, these High def audios will only work if you have a receiver that can decode DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.
Otherwise you will just get the regular audio track.

Man 640kbs? Sounds like overkill to me haha, pro-tools HD on an 8 core system can only handle like 8-12 192k tracks at once. Not to mention practically no human ear could discern 192 from 640...
The lossless encoding probably makes a quite noticeable difference though.
