blu rays that are in letterbox
    #16675878 -

Why on earth do they present blu ray in this format?  I just recently started upgrading to blu ray like a month ago and before that I knew nothing about it and just assumed for some reason that letterbox would not be something I had to think worry about.  I hate movies in this format, it turns my 50 inch tv basicaly into a 40 inch and realy takes me outta the experience as I cannot look past it.  Some letterboxing is tolerable as its not to big but some is just atrocious and seems like it takes up half the screen.  I just bought transformers dark of the moon 3d blu ray/blu ray combo disk and theres those big black bars.  There is no reason to present a movie like that in this format, its almost like a big fuck you IMO, you spend all this money for the tv the blu player and the blu ray for one reason, picture quality and yes thats there but to have such a small picture is BS.  End rant.

Your TV is the wrong size.

Actually this explains it pretty well
http://www.hometheater.com/content/aspect-ratio-oddities

From the link
Quote:
Despite the many years it took to get used to the idea of letterboxing, people still ask why movies are made in different aspect ratios. Why don’t all movie studios standardize their filming formats to 1.78:1, which will fill an HDTV screen when their products come to Blu-ray? The choice of aspect ratio is an artistic decision made by the director and cinematographer. Would the sweeping epic vistas of the Lord of the Rings trilogy have the same impact at a narrow ratio? Conversely, would the Godfather saga feel so intimate if it had been shot wider? Each movie has its own artistic needs. The goal of home theater isn’t to fill an HDTV screen. The television is just a picture frame. The movie is the artwork. If the art doesn’t fit precisely into the frame, some matting may be needed to dis- play it properly. As filmmakers con- tinue to experiment with the forms their art takes, new types of matting may be needed.

16:9 aspect ratio of modern tellies are a compromise. 16:9 is the best ratio to fit the wide variety of cinema aspect widescreen ratios. Modern films will be 16:9, as the editors will want something that looks good on a home theather system as well as the big screen.

Old films like Lawrence of Arabia will always be in silly letterboxes. Also, Woody Allen invented the letterbox, as before then widescreen films to fit on tellies would have a broadcast editor pan and scan, keeping the focus on what he felt was important. Woody Allen was upset by this, and insisted if his films were to be broadcasted, that they be shrunk to fit the telly, resulting in letterbox view, as the sides of the film were important.

Solutions would be to use your blu ray player's zoom feature to change the aspect ratio, or your tellies zoom feature, or a pc with a blu ray player, use VLC and set the aspect ratio to 16:9.

Yeah thats what gets me, I have some blu rays of movies from the 90's that fills my whole screen and looks great yet I get transformers 3 from what 2010-2011 or something and its got clunky black bars, that realy suprised me (I will say though it hd some of the best HD and CGI quality that I have ever seen, I dont know why all tv retailers dont have this movie running on their screens instead of the shitty quality demos).  I also got LOTR return of the king yesterday along with transformers and its in letterbox too.  After reading that article I kind of get it but in reality that whole "directors vision" BS is more to suite their tastes more then the consumer, 99.9% of the people paying money for these blu rays Im guessing want their HDtvs screen to be filled vs seeing the "directors vision" in huge letterbox.

As indicated in the article posted earlier, modern wide screen TV's are 16:9 ratio.  Movies are filmed in a "wider" ratio, so to make it fit you have to letterbox it.

To m knowledge, Vizio is the first mass manufacturer to make an even wider HDTV.  They have a CINEMA WIDE TV.  I'm actually considering to purchase.

Obviously, the drawback is with an even wider TV, parallel cropping will occur, for broadcast TV viewing.

My dad has a huge ass 60 incher but he sits fucking 20 feet away from it. I watch movies on a 20 something inch and I sit fairly close to it. The letterboxing doesn't bother me because I sit close enough and the percentage of my field of view taken up by the movie image is large even though it's a small television.

So I guess one possible solution is to either sit closer or get a bigger television.

You cant sit any closer to my 50 inch panny plasma than I already do without getting eye strain, headaches etc.  The thing about the black bars that bugs me the most though is that they are a burn in risk for my plasma (although it may be slight risk its still something I always worry about) and thats just not something I need to worry about after dropping all that money, I should be able to pop in a blu ray and sit back and enjoy it, not worry its gonna destroy my picture because of letterboxing.

so you would prefer to pay more for the better quality of blue ray but don't want see the whole picture?

it sucks when scenes aren't in letterbox and you miss what's happening in the periphery of the shot

"Remember the scene in Star Wars where Luke is looking through futuristic binoculars? We see what he's looking at, see the Banthas, and we hear Luke say, referring to the Sand People, "I can see one of them now." In the pan-n-scan version, you can't see the Sand Person that Luke can see, so his comment is confusing and silly. In the widescreen version, you can see the Sand Person over on the right edge.

Pulp Fiction is another that is especially damaged by the pan-n-scan format. There's one scene in particular that suffers: it is the shot where Samuel L. Jackson's character, on one side of the screen, shoots another character on the other side of the screen. In the widescreen version, the two are on the screen at the same time, the shooting takes place, and that's that. In the pan-n-scan version, the two characters could not be on the screen at the same time, so the view focuses on Samuel L. Jackson, then, when the shot occurs, the view zips over to the other character. But the effect of the shot is spoiled. The intention was for the shot to be static; zipping the view from one to the other lessens the scene's impact.

Grease is another one crippled by the pan-n-scan practice. The director made tight use of the wide frame, and so the pan-n-scan version has people talking to other people off-screen throughout. Special effects movies like Independence Day, Armageddon, Twister, and Men In Black suffer greatly: countless hours and dollars were spent making the special effects, and you scarcely see half of them."

No I would prefer all movies to be originaly shot in an aspect ratio that takes home viewing into account and not just what looks best on the big screen.  Opening weekend and a week or two after are realy the only times that movies in the theatre are making big money, so to shoot movies in a format for a screen that they are only going to be seen on for a week or so compared to a home theatre where someone is going to re watch the movie for years to come is ridiculous.  If it comes to losing part of the picture vs letterbox Im obviously going to choose letter box (otherwise Id just hit zoom on my tv) but if they just shot it in an apsect ratio that will fit home theatres it would solve all that and the overpaid idiot directors arent gonna lose any money.  These guys are only able to be in the position they are in and make the money they make because people like me and others in this thread pay the money for their movies, so maybe they should put a little thought into that before releasing a film that is only to their preferences.

the whole reason people go to the movies is for the bigger screen

do you realize how much it would suck to go to the movies and see a giant square screen?

movie directors make movies, not tv specials

WTF are you talking about, my last house on the left blu ray for example is shot in an aspect ratio that has no black bars on the blu ray and it was not on "a giant square screen" in the movie theatre.  It looked just as good as every other movie in the theatre and also looks fantastic on blu ray so I dont know what your argument is.

There is no missing material, the only way you lose material is to zoom or crop the image of a letterboxed movie, then you will lose some of it but like I said earlier if the director chooses an apsect ratio that wont require letterboxing for home formats than the picture will fill the screen and no part of the image is lost.  Thats what Ive gathered from the reading Ive been doing but Im not 100% on anything, hopefully someone  with more knowledge than me can come along and clarify because this is not any area of expertise for me at all.

if it looked normal in theaters then it has to be cropped if it fills your tv screen

try watching a scene and then turn on the letterbox format if you can, and you'll see the difference

What?  Most stuff is 21:9,seomthing else, 16:9 or 4:3.  It would be bad ass having a 21:9 Tv.  But anyways you should only have black bars on top and bottom if it not super old movie.  Then just crop it the way you like with zoom?  Personally I like to view every bit of the picture always and never stretch anything.

What they should have done is made bluerays higher than 1080p, that way you could crop it and still use every single pixal, or use on a new cina wide tv

Yes they will be push wider tv's again, just like 4;3 > 16:9 > I think standard will be at 21:9.  2556x1080
