So, how do I innoculate?
    #1667057 - 06/27/03 12:12 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

A friend of mine is going to be trying birdseed for the first time. He has quart jars, tyvek envelopes, plastic lids, and coffee filters for air filtration. Is this how you set it up:

tyvek first, then plastic lids over the tyvek, then coffee filters over the plastic lids? how big does the innoculation hole in the plastic lid need to be? is it okay to put a hole around an inch wide right in the middle of the plastic lid? will the tyvek and coffee filters keep moisture out of the quart jars while pressure cooking?

how do I go about innoculating with a syringe? can i just go right thru the tyvek?

sorry for all the questions.

You DO NOT innoculate through the tyvec or the lid. The tyvec is to give your jars air and filter out the contamns. If you poke a hole in it you will let contamns go through the hole. You screw off the lid and squirt the spores onto the side of the jar and screw the lid back on. You will need a 1/4 inch hole in the lid, Not a whole inch. The coffee filters does not stop water getting in the jars bit alumnium foil does. Id use popcorn as your a newb and its impossible to get the water content wrong.

Also, in 6T's WBS Tek he doesn't place aluminum foil over the lids. How does his water content not get changed if all he has is a filter disk, lid, and coffee filters?

The way I do it is...I make two holes in the medal lid that cover the tyvek. I punch through one hole for innocculation, then immediately tape off the innoculation hole leaving the other one for air exchange. I have two quart jars that are almost finished colonizing after two weeks using this method. No contams

That sounds like a way I could go about doing it.

When you pressure cooked your jars, did you cover them with aluminum foil?

Edit: I could just make two holes like described above and then cover those with tape. But then there wouldn't be reason to use coffee filters. Correct?

I used coffe filters just in case, however they were pretty wet upon removal. I think it would be best to cover with tinfoil while pressure cooking, it won't hurt anything. I have the coffee filters on each jar while they were incubating, dust covers so to speak.

Ah, okay. I'm going to just use aluminum foil to cover the holes along with tape for extra security. Thanks for the help, guys.
