Tyvek
    #3934683 - 03/18/05 08:40 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

So is tyvek basically the 'not paper' mailer things I can get from the post office? Do folks recomend using a piece of tyvek instead of or in addition to the lid? If using popcorn tek does anyone prefer tyvek over polyfil, and can I inject straight through the tyvek?

thanks

Yes, it's those synthetic Post Office envelopes. Tyvek isn't very breathe-able, and I personally feel that it's not a good solution for filter lids. Some people choose it, but Poly Fill is as simple as it gets for me. One 1/4" hole drilled in the lid, stuffed with PF. Can be inoculated through, reused, and excellent breathe ability. A 20 oz. bag of Poly Fill from Walmart will run you $3 or so, and lasts forever. Keep it cheap and simple.

Also ... Ass-uming my corn colonizes ok - when it comes time to case, how thick of a layer of the colonized corn should I lay down on the bottom layer. I would make it thick enough to not see the bottom layer, should it be even thicker? 1/2"? 3/4"?

thanks

1-2 CC's should work fine, just be sure to shake it around after inoculation. About your casing question, you want to shoot for a thick substrate, 2-4 inches if possible. A top casing layer of 1/4" works like a charm.

Wow - I'm glad I asked - that's a hell of a lot thicker, and a hell of a lot more corn than I figured on.

preciate it.

tyvek works great, i take a mailer, cut around the parameter so i have 2 halves, set a lid on it and cut it into about 3 strips, then cut those to a lil larger than the width of a lid, takes only a minute and gives you about 16 or so filters per mailer, and out of my last 21 1/2 pint wbs jars, i've lost 0 to contams (since i started using tyvek [and those are also w/ my own, first timer spore syringes]) GL

tyvek is quite breathable, it's marketed as a vapor barrier being able to let
moisture out of your house without letting water in

I just got some from the hardware store and its not nearly as breathable as polyfill.
I tried to blow through each lid tyvec and polyfill and the tyvec is impossible to breath through. My cheaks still hurt a little.
Poly on the other hand is alot easier.

Prisoner
Do you use some kind of superthin tyvec?
What hole size would you suggest?
Im debating putting this stuff on my lids and just taking it back to the store.

How do you attach polyfill to the lids like that diver? And is it just covering a single inoculation hole, or multiple? Polyfil will hold up to a PC'in right?

keep it in mind when it comes to contamination, po;yfill when it's wet or after shaking grains can introduce contams, tyvek will not, tyvek filters to .3 microns...

I use a hole from 1/2inch to 1 inch and have even done it with just the ring and
tyvek, I suggest about 3/4 inch, it can be punched with an old chisle, I would
never go back to polyfil after using tyvek

What do you think about polyfill with a coffee filter rubber banded around it when shaking or transporting?

I totally disagree P#1. Everyone is terrified about Poly Fill getting wet and introducing contams. Guess what? Every quart jar I do gets shaken pretty rough and as a result the Poly Fill gets extremely wet. Practically zero contam rate from jar after jar of saturated Poly Fill.

Wet poly fill does not equal contams.

Tyvek is sub par gas exchange for any application in this hobby, I'm sorry. Especially when compared with Poly Fill.

polyfil doesnt always allow for contams, I have had it happen with MM Filter Disks
and with polyfil, I have never had it happen with tyvek.

I drill a single 1/4" inch hole in the lid, and push a wad of PF through, semi-tight. PF can be reused over and over, yes it stands up to PC'ing.

For extra protection (not needed though) you can double up two coffee filters and secure with a rubber band. Like I mentioned earlier, practically zero contamination rate after doing TONS of jars this way.
