Does TYVEK allow enough air flow?
    #1948553 - 09/24/03 06:04 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Can someone that has used TYVEK envelopes please tell me if they feel that co2 escapes through it sufficiently? I bought a few envelopes and I cant blow through them so I was wondering. Thanks.

Yes, almost too efficiently. You want VERY LITTLE gas exchange in colonizing jars. Most people think tyvek works best when restricted to a 1/4 hole in the lid, otherwise your substrate may dry out!

ok, does it allow enuff aire escape for me to have the 1/4" holes in a lid with the tyvek on top of the lid to tighten securly and pc it like this? or does it not allow for enough air to pass, i always leave my jars cracked open slightly but id rather not just for lil extra parnoia sake when cooling

My friend also tried the "blow through the tyvec" test and found he could not. I told him don't worry Ive seen it on the shroomery! But we both have a slightly different question about the breathability of tyvec though. He has just won an ebay auction for a "profile 9500 duel air pump" which he will put in a plastic container with a good sized hole cut in the side and a tyvec layer taped over the hole to fashion a sort of air filter. Is there enough air flow through the tyvec so his pump doesn't burn out? Also,

What do you mean, "1/4 hole"? is that 1 of the 4 holes in the lide are untaped and then a layer of tyvec is secured over top of the whole lid? (PF style BRF cakes)
Thanks!

the tyvek envelopes will work fine, but if you think you need more air you can try polyfil. personally i like the tyvek, its a little less hassle but either will work. good luck !
