mushroom hunt results, now with spore prints + working pics
    #1663710 - 06/26/03 06:19 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

These were all found in woodchips on dirt. There are about 4 differant types. They were found in Canberra, Australia. All pictures between 50kb and 70kb.

I have cut this down to the two types of mushrooms with the clearest pictures and that I could get a spore print for. The original complete set of pictures can be found a few posts below this (includes more detailed pictures of the 1st and 4th type of mushrooms).

1st. type

a. woodchips on dirt (where and what does it grow on)
b. dark purple/blue (maybe brown rusty. (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc) included in photos
c. Measurements of cap and stem. included in photos
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc) hollow stem, can be seen in photos
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, concical/spherical, convex/concave, etc) slimey, sorta wet and damp. other details can be seen in pictures.
f. Spore print color on pictures
g. Color that the mushroom briuses - unable to see for sure, maybe blue/purple from looking at gills.
h. Scent of mushroom - did not determine

4th type

a. Habitat (where and what does it grow on) woodchips on dirt
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc) light/medium orange, on photos
c. Measurements of cap and stem. on photos
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc) on photos, solid
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, concical/spherical, convex/concave, etc) orange, on photos
f. Spore print color on pictures
g. Color that the mushroom briuses dark orange, purple?
h. Scent of mushroom not determined

Mushrooms here seem to grow in cold conditions after rain.
Help on the id of any of those would be helpful.

I'd love to give the IDs a shot, but I can't see the photos. And a lot of the descriptions unfortunately depend heavily on the photos.

And that's too bad, since he really did do a good job of writing his stuff up to get a response.

Maybe if the photos were uploaded to here?

Happy mushrooming!

Motaman: You rock  Thanks for your help.

A little about the pictures.
The pictures for the 1st, 2nd and 4th type turned out as good representations of how the mushrooms looked.  The 5th type looked differant to the 4th type in that they (the 5th) were much more red than orange.  Unfortunately they look both look about the same colour in the pictures.

The 3rd type originally were light grey on the top and the gills but appear more orange in that picture (in future I will use a better light source).

In the case of the 3rd and 5th types of mushrooms go with the little typed information accompanying the photos for gill and cap colour rather than the colours in the photos.

This is my first *real* mushroom hunt and identification post so thanks for bearing with me.

That's much better...

I note that there are no spore print colors listed, so that increases the uncertainty of my guesses. Also, when asked for texture, one of the things that's useful is to hear if any parts are slimy or sticky, since we can't tell that from a photo.

The first one looks like either a Psathyrella or Stropharia. Examination of the cuticle would decide things. Just looking at it I'm inclined to go with Psathyrella, but either is reasonable.

The second one looks like a Pholiota. Was the cap slimy? Are there any scales on the cap, or is that just dirt?

The third ones could be Psathyrellas, maybe?

The fourth ones, the cluster, suggest Gymnopilus or Pholiota. Spore print will help resolve which genus.

The last ones suggest maybe Pholiota to me.

You certainly didn't post any easy ones. All of those guesses above are very tentative. Without a spore print, IDing is much more difficult.

Happy mushrooming!
