You probably mean lower then the thyroid. It is not a coincidence that both MCO and Chakras can correlate the heart-center to the thymus. (nice try though, keep practicing, and props for correlating metta)

sorry your image is oversimplistic as are your ideas
here is the thymus gland it is well below the thyroid
and the throat center (for karuna practice) is above the thymus but below the thyroid

metta concentration is about 3 centimeters below the sternum joint of the ribs as depicted here

your reference material is based upon synthetic new age attempts to heap value on yogic priciples using erroneous quasi medical projection.

as I indicated before heart center is lower than thymus and all chakras are functionally arbitrary as focus locations for concentration, however the traditional practices that use chakras are fairly specific.

I know of both the traditional assignments and of the underlying arbitrariness.

be good.

Yep the thymus is the spot.

Good luck with your practice.

Metta focus is on LOVE:

Quote:
Contemporary instruction for the cultivation of loving-kindness – such as is found in the works of Sharon Salzberg,[11] the Triratna Buddhist Community's Kamalashila,[5] and Matthieu Ricard[12] – is often based in part on a method found in Buddhaghosa's 5th c. CE Pāli exegetical text, the Path to Purification (Pali:Visuddhimagga), Chapter IX.[13][14] This traditional approach is best known for identifying successive stages of meditation during which one progressively cultivates loving-kindness towards:

    oneself[15]
    a good friend[16]
    a "neutral" person
    a difficult person[17]
all four of the above equally[18][19]
and then gradually the entire universe[20]

One should avoid choosing someone to whom one is sexually attracted or who is dead.[21] For a "neutral" person, choose someone that you might come into contact with every day, but who does not give rise to strong positive nor strong negative emotions. For a "difficult" person, traditionally choose an enemy, but avoid choosing a person who has just wrecked your life, unless you are very well grounded in awareness.

Matthieu Ricard has recommended that metta practitioners choose to meditate on a person for whom it is very easy to feel unconditional love and compassion.

I would be interested what you are practicing that says the heart center is at the solar plexus and that you should focus there for metta.

Quote:
metta concentration is about 3 centimeters below the sternum joint of the ribs as depicted here

There is a very distinctly different sensation at the location you describe from this perspective. I bet if you do some more searching you can find out what.

(P.S. Inner smile isn't fixed to the thymus gland anymore then awareness is)

Heres a vid of Mantak Chia trying to point towards it for you.

If you weren't pretending to know more then you do then I would probably just tell you, but the way it looks you would just use it to pretend better.

Even if they were a bit off, it seems like the meditation focused on cultivating awareness in areas with many nerve clusters and functionality. That doesn't discount the endeavor to me.

Only way to experience it is to find out.

Some don't go beyond metta, so it is easier for them to confuse the location.

When you get into things like tummo, nei kung, or mo pai to name a few, it becomes more evident.

Not that there is anything wrong with sticking to metta or heart-center work.

The traditionalists have a lot to lose if this phenomena becomes objective, like all of their beliefs.

So they try to discredit the ones objectifying the phenomena, because it doesn't flow with how they were taught it and with the beliefs they were taught.

The "New Agers" are just guys weeding out the beliefs imo.

not at the solar plexus,
I was lucky to have a rinpoche give me private instruction on this,
solar plexus is no more than 2 inches above your belly button.
unless you have a very high belly button you should have no confusion about this, fire center (tejo) is at solarplexus.

heart chakra is just below the cleft of the sternum, unless you have the unusual drop center sternum bone (some throwbacks have that) in which case it is at the point of the sternum.

the chakra zone is close to the skin, it has a rearward projection that rises, often chakras are conceived as sperical (especially heart) within the body.

thymus is like a hat on top of your physical heart - it is not heart, and glands are not chakras, glands are endocrine tissue, chakras are not tissue.

you may think you know better but are being confused by new age junk.

in any case, our discussion would certainly convey that arbitrariness underlies much of chakric lore.

btw
thymus is not heart and immunity is not related to metta any more than it is medically related to the idea of healing which psychologically goes with all forms of meditation on any chakras.

Yeah, the thymus (heart center) is under the top of the sternum and the solar plexus (celiac plexus) is at the bottom of the sternum or xiphoid process.

It gets confusing in traditions where the "heart center" is also referred to as the Middle Dan Tien or (MDT), in which case they could be speaking about either or.

A little bit more about the thymus:

Quote:
The thymus is a specialized organ of the immune system. The thymus "educates" T-lymphocytes (T cells), which are critical cells of the adaptive immune system.

Each T cell attacks a foreign substance which it identifies with its receptor. T cells have receptors which are generated by randomly shuffling gene segments. Each T cell attacks a different antigen. T cells that attack the body's own proteins are eliminated in the thymus. Thymic epithelial cells express major proteins from elsewhere in the body, and T cells that respond to those proteins are eliminated through programmed cell death (apoptosis).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thymus

Learning how to exercise this can help you take more profound preventative measures when you know you are about to get sick, or even just by keeping a healthy amount of T-cells in circulation.

Now wonder how I know this yet was never taught by any personal instructor, ever.

My guess is that your rinpoche says that you must have (pay) an instructor to do it properly or you could hurt yourself (fear mongering).

The "Inner Fire" or solar plexus chakra is accessed from the hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis IE; tummo, Nei Kung, Mo Pai focus on this.

Quote:
Short overview of thyroid homeostasis.[1]

The hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis (HPT axis for short, aka thyroid homeostasis or thyrotropic feedback control) is part of the endocrine system responsible for the regulation of metabolism.

As its name suggests, it depends upon the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the thyroid gland.

The hypothalamus senses low circulating levels of thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) and responds by releasing thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). The TRH stimulates the pituitary to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The TSH, in turn, stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone until levels in the blood return to normal. Thyroid hormone exerts negative feedback control over the hypothalamus as well as anterior pituitary, thus controlling the release of both TRH from hypothalamus and TSH from anterior pituitary gland.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothalamic%E2%80%93pituitary%E2%80%93thyroid_axis

Obviously there has to be a split in awareness between each of these points.

Ideally it's when you're thoughtless. That's the goal anyway. I suppose there's varying degrees of meditative state which one doesn't have to be completely thoughtless to enter.

Do you do any sort of special breathing?

I found abdominal breathing to be quite helpful. It allows oxygen into the gut to be absorbed through the intestines increasing the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation, or creation of useable energy as ATP.

I agree with you that emptiness is foundation.

Yeah I just try to make my breaths slow & deep and if you pause at each inhalation and exhalation for a moment it helps you to settle. After a little while tho I try to just get as deep/silent as possible and try to just be in the moment and not worry about technique.

I think that emptiness allows awareness more "freedom" instead of being fixated and preoccupied on thoughts.

of course meditation is a form of thinking, just not the usual kind of word chase -

even the embrace of voidness is a matter of mental activity.
All mental contents is thinking, jut not always dialog, or memory oriented.

how do you start to meditate if not by directing your thought,
how do you continue to meditate if not by keeping attention on your intended practice.
and what is the intended practice if not mental choreography.

it is thought
just not crappy thought.
not ricochet thought.
not obsessive or indulgent thought.

what benefit would it be if it were not thought.
all activity on the mind stage including keeping still is thought.

What a tangent. It is said that meditation starts when thought stops. This mental silence is a time for your psyche to be healed and nourished.
