i was watching this documentary about the rise of the mafia today on the history channel. what the whole thing illustrated so clearly is that if there is something that the people want that the government tries to restrict, if the potential market is big enough, criminal syndicates will rise to control the underground market, and it will not be pretty.

the show traced the history of irish, jewish, and italian gangs in new york. originally, they were in control of the prostitution and gambling trades, which were illegal. the gangs were pretty small and localized until prohibition came along, and then they got huge. the mafia was born. they were into not only gambling and prostitution, but also bootlegging. now we've got the drug war, and they're cashing in on that as well.

prohibition is ridiculous, be it of drugs, booze, porn, prostitution, gambling, or guns. when are people gonna learn...

I watched that too. The mafia simply fills in the supply where there is demand. Is it wrong? Don't know. Most people who use drugs/hookers/gamble will do it regardless of its legality. I found it funny that the people in the areas where the mafia operates say they make it safer because people are afraid to commit crimes in fear of reprocussions from mafia members.
