Pris, If it really was all about personal responsibility then the government would let people use these drugs if they wanted, even if it was in detriment to themselves.

It is about maintaining control and having a reason to take people rights away.

drugs, trafficking, manufacture, cultivation, etc... they're all illegal and
the DEA is sworn to uphold the law and as crazy as it sounds they really dont
make people break the law, so the DEA doesnt ruin anyones life, they ruin
their own by breaking the law through conscious choices

now if you wanna get payback, start following gumby, find out who the DEA

go to his parents neighbor, kick in the door and steal everything after you

Maybe the DEA agents themselves don't care about the individual drug user, but it's part of their job to enforce the laws against it.  Just like Cops i've spoken to don't think weed should be illegal, but they still bust people, because that's THEIR JOB and they want a pay check at the end of the day.

Essentially these people are sell-outs in my eyes, and that's even worse than being misguided and thinking that drugs are the devil. :nonono:

incorrect.

is drug trafficking illegal?
is cultivation of marijuana or psilocybes illegal?
is manufacture of illicit drugs illegal?

those doing these things know this just as a rapist knows rape is illegal
but his goal seems worth the risk of the penalty to him, did the victim
ruin the rapists life? did the cops ruin the rapists life?

The DEA is responsible for raiding houses, killing people and animals, and putting away good people for decades.

Tell that to William Pickard or anyone else who has had their life ruined by the DEA. If you believe the DEA is only responsible for taking down "the big bad violent criminals" then you're ignorant as hell.

Wrong... the DEA isn't responsible at all, just enforcing the laws. You better talk to congress about the injustices they are bringing.

That's a blatantly horrible analogy.  In that analogy, the drug user is more likely to be the rape victim than the rapist, since they are the one that is the prey, not the predator.

The drug user, like the rape victim, knows that he/she risks the possibility of getting raped and/or imprisoned then raped, especially if they are at the wrong place at the wrong time.

But that doesn't mean they won't stop using drugs, or wearing certain clothing that they prefer.  They may be conscious of the risks they are taking by putting themselves in certain situations, but that doesn't justify what their attackers do to them just because they are forewarned about the possibility of an attack.

My problem is that the DEA spends so much time and money enforcing the law in other countries, when it's obvious that it's ultimately a demand-side issue.  I also have a problem with anyone who enforces the law because it's the law.  Laws aren't infallible, everyone knows that America was founded on breaking laws, and, to paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr., an unjust law is no law at all.

I agree with you, however, about taking responsibility.  If you buy a bag of coke, you probably have blood on your hands.  You've just taken part in an economic exchange whose basis is incredible suffering and violence.  Railing against the government isn't going to change that.  You still have the choice to A) Not partake of a drug while it is heavily linked to violence, and B) Go out and do something to change the laws.

Most drug users don't want to play stupid games with laws that limit personal freedoms... but a bunch of armed DEA thugs will force you to play their game and punish you heavily for not doing what they say. Countless people make a conscious choice to break the rules of the game every day... but most of them were forced into playing the game in the first place.

Drug users just want to exercise their personal freedom, a God given right. Yet men with guns are forcing them to obey their rules.

You're off in a delusional candyland if you think the DEA doesn't ruin lives. Your logic is akin to something like this...

The DEA doesn't ruin lives, the people who choose to do drugs ruin their own lives. Just like a slave ruins his own life by making the conscious choice to break free of his master.

Seriously though, what did you expect to come from such a thread?

Showing that not every DEA agent is out to get the individual drug user who is just having fun, that some of them are out there to take down violent criminals. Showing that maybe retired DEA agents realize that they've been enforcing bullshit laws that they don't agree with.

Since you asshats already opened the can of worms, do you really think that if the US were to legalize drugs like coke, meth, heroin, pot, etc. that these cartels who murder people en masse wouldn't still exist? I think you're sorely mistaken. Money is money, they will make it anyway they can, regardless of if the US legalizes shit. They will still flood the US markets with their goods and the violence will still continue. Capitalism, bitches. They know all about it.

Drugs are money, so what is the incentive to organize if drugs are legal?  What other goods can they market?

What would they do regardless of the legalization? What would finance this huge gang organization?  Give me a break, this is funded by the illegal drug trade.

Please tell us what other means they could profit from. there is none today. Illegal drugs finance the violence, that should be obvious.

the rapist is morally wrong, responsible use of drugs isnt. There is a difference.

It is about maintaining control over populations and whole countries.

The blackmarket already exists, thats what the trade of those drugs was founded on. If the US were to legalize them they would just push their product at lower prices on the street and try to out compete the pharmaceutical companies. Isn't that just logical?

That would happen for a while.  The difference in their profit margin would be so great, though, that they wouldn't be able to sustain themselves.  If people have easy access to a product at a reasonable mark-up, and vendors have easy access to legitimate suppliers who offer fair bulk prices, they are not going to be rushing to make deals with violent criminal syndicates across the U.S. border.  Are any large-scale moonshiners from the prohibition era still competing with Budweiser?

No! We could never do #2. That would be considered breaking a law! By your standards that means we would be justified spending ridiculous amounts of time in prison for consciously breaking the rules!

I'd rather just play it safe, lube up my asshole, and wait patiently for the government to tell me what to do next... because we all sure as shit know congress isn't going to be paying attention anytime soon.

No, I 100% agree.  People who claim cannabis isn't linked to drug-related violence are just unaware.  Of course, you can find "clean" cannabis a lot more easily than coke, because you can grow cannabis easily and get your seeds from Canadian or Dutch companies; whereas cocaine is only produced in underdeveloped South American nations and distributed by criminal organizations.  But if you don't know who's growing your weed, it's perfectly likely you are contributing money into the hands of violent criminals.

In Colombia, they have a saying: "The weed comes down off the same mountain as the coke."
