Grafted Peyote seems to be shrivelling... :'(
    #16424187 -

So I recently got this grafted cacti (My first ever!) and decided to transplant it in a nice big clay pot to let it sit for the next few years. (realised this must have shocked the roots system, stupid me...) Put it in a window sill and noticed it starting to shrivel and go really dry.. Watered it and took it out of the sun and have kept it in the shade watering it once every two weeks.  It gets pretty cold here at night but no frost (46f) and can go up to 68f during the day so i generally leave them outside.  Do u guys reckon its sunburn or its rot? Ive been fairly carefull to keep it out of direct sunlight for fear of sunburn yet after two weeks now i am noticing it seems to get even more shrivelled... Plz Help all advice very welcome!!

Im not an expert on grafts (Yet!) but from my understanding if its a fresh graft the shriveling at first is normal.

However yours looks like its been grafted for a while, i say this due to the abnormal lumpy growth.

In my experience the purpley parts are most likely sunburn, and i believe those torn looking parts are somewhat common in grafted lophs.

Once again I'm not an expert and I would wait to get confirmation from some of the more veteran growers here before taking my word for it  :cookiemonster:

Sorry it was grafted last summer (october 2011) and kept in a small plastic pot till May.  I wanted to give it more root space so decided to transplant it into a bigger clay pot. Trying not to damage it, (inexperienced grower talking here) I kept it in a windowsill that had light for like 6-8 hours a day and waited for the soil to dry out for a few days before i watered it for the first time.

This is when I noticed the discolouring and the bottom seemed to start shrivelling. Read up on this site that this is pretty stupid and figured it was sunburn, so I put it in shade for the past 2 - 3 weeks and gave it a good watering and am now waiting for the soil to completely dry.

Ive been keeping close watch on the damaged looking areas and have noticed that they are not getting better (perhaps even worse...) and am wondering what other precautions I can take to prevent it further shrivelling

I will be sure to post updated photos If I see more noticeable damage. Please if anyone wants more info let me know, I really dont want this thing to die! :/

AH right, i missed that part sorry. yah repotting it and withholding water could definately cause the graft to hurt. The torn areas will never get better, but as the button grows theyll move more towards the bottom :\.  As long as you keep it in some shade for now, and slowly introduce it back to sunlight  im sure it will survive, the key is patience ;P

If you worry too much and are constantly trying to do this and that to make it better, your probably gunna end up hurting the cacti.  They like to take things very slowly.

It may of been the full sun but judging by the temperatures you've given us it could also have gone dormant from not being watered for some time after being transplanted. Maybe even a combination of both. It would help to know what part of the world you're in when posting a plant related problem.

These cacti slow down their growth to nil in cooler weather and generally go a little soft and can take on a shriveled appearance like yours has. Once the weather warms up and they start growing they will quickly plump up again once given water. During the dormant period watering isn't necessary.

I'd keep it in semi shaded position for now, it shouldn't get any worse, if it does post back here. Definitely no full sun. Once Spring comes and it starts growing you can give it water and it should continue to grow. These little cacti are quite resilient. Rot is a worry but what you have it should overcome.

Thanks for the info.

I am situated in South Africa, the western cape, and its winter here, so the rains come every few days but the lowest the temperature has gotten is about 44f at nights.

I geuss ill keep it in the shade for now and stop watering it.

Do you guys think i should not let it have any water at all or be watered naturally by rainfall every few days?  Im also worried it will start rotting as it can take a good few days for the soil to dry out in this cold weather.
