So this is my 'hydroponic' cactus experiment
    #14599997 -

(Inspired by discussion from another thread.)

I'm going to try growing a cactus in pure perlite. Water and nutrients will be supplied as needed.
It's not exactly hydroponic, but it's soilless gardening.
I happened to have some fresh cuttings of Cylindropuntia imbricata, a native species which is tough and grows quickly.

It'll be a week before it gets any water, then I'll treat it like any other cutting.
I think it will root into the perlite and grow without complaint. I'll update as events require.

Rubble in the bottom for drainage, then perlite. Miracle Gro brand, fresh out of a new bag.
Add cactus, some positioning rocks, more perlite.
Top with some washed road gravel to hold the perlite down, and tag it.

I grow some lophophora in pure moler. Great for rooting cuttings in too. :goodluck:

Quote:
Moler is only found in the islands of Mors and Fur in Denmark. Moler is a naturally found and mineral based type of clay, characterized by its terracotta colour. Moler clay is the geological name for a special combination of diatoms which were deposited more than 54 million years ago. The Moler clay deposits feature numerous dark seams, which are strata of volcanic ash. These layers of ash are used to identify various types of Moler and thereby guarantee a selection of highest quality.

The raw clay is calcined, i.e. it is burned at approx. 750 degrees centigrade, and through this process the product becomes sterile and the grains get hard and super absorbent.

That same thread inspired me to throw some pereskiopsis into different hydroponic media.  One is in a static solution culture (in the style of HTTL), one is in perlite (passive hydro) and another in rockwool (also passive).  In a few days I'm going to do the same setup with 3 Opuntia subulata cuttings.

I love how one idea inspires people to experiment like this.  I think hydroponic cacti could be really productive, not to mention that it's always fun experimenting.

Cool i look forward to seeing the results, I have many Lopho under the age of 10 who have all been in a substrate with about 60% perlite 20% sharp sand and 20% sifted John innes #1. One thing i did have with some of them when they first went into this medium was that liquid drained past them so fast they had little time to take in any and as peyote root is self central it took a while before they adapted, I watered less more frequentl;y for a grow season and the next season they were and have been fine since, you taking any photo's?
