Has anyone here attempted to grow truffles? I wasnt able to find anything very helpful doing a search on this site. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated. I understand that this would be very difficult to grow....i just want some info if its available.
Thanks dizz

upon further research i see that truffles can take 5-7 years to start fruiting. I should have checked into it further before posting.

hello all and dizzm yes a obvious choice of initial query and probably some quests concerning the fabled morels also. it seems that truffles and morels are not the only edibles but some of the most generally gastronomically sought after. the truffles i think are some of the (mycoryhizzal?) fungi that have a symbiosis with the root structures of higher tree botanical forms. so far it seems that u have to have living trees in place and have them innoculated with truffle mycelium. the other great sought after is the morels who seems to have some optimum cultivation parameters that are not easily (empirically?) mimicked commercially...umm i mean it seems that no one has readily figure out how to grow then by the gram, oz,#,bushel, ton predictably? this is just my observation but there are other highly knowlegeable ppl in our community who may be able to modify or update my info....perhaps this is the 1st step on ur road to solving the problems and becoming famous. good luck

You can actually buy hazel or oak saplings that have been inoculated with truffle ectomycorrhizae which take approximately 3 years or so from planting until harvesting which can continue for decades.
Check out this site.

good update biotek.. my ideas of truffle culture have been modified. so truffle cultivation is now on par with say vineyard developement. i would opt for the hazelnut tree so i could get the nut themselves as a bonus!.... oui oui, sometime in the coming future i can hope to see nice big fresh juicy truffles in the local amerikan supermarket. p.s. in addition to my misspelling of mycoryhizzal, no "y" = mycorrhizzal , the new word for me ectomycorrhizzal has spooky other worldly connotations to it

No problem fellas
I'm looking into getting an inoculated sapling when I've got enough cash saved up !
You can actually buy fresh truffles from some sites and I was toying with the idea of taking a culture from one and inoculating a load of saplings myself !

hey biotk out of curiousity, how much are the etocmycorrhizzaled saplings? is that shipped 3or4yrs old in a 5gal can...probably bareroot? thats a great idea getting invivo material then making ur own innoculate. yes, from 1 small viable strand to multi qt spawn jars : ) yah got it all planned...pyramidally, i ll cultivate acres. no just jokin ,i really live in a desert environment and so growing a orchord /forest is not in step with water avalibility. not even sure if normal hazel will even grow here without copious amounts of h2o and whats a oak?. i have to do things in quality not a quantity way. jest checkn by. gud luck

Interesting... Does this mean that you can grow them anywhere with just a few saplings? I would assume they would need more than just inoculated roots.
