In extreme situations the human psyche will suppress or enhance feelings to perpetuate survival. It's a basic survival mechanism. Primitive in fact.

any family member that could corroborate the story,. leak them to the press

that doesnt seem in the slightest bit suspicious to you, covering their own
asses in case something like this would be buried by the government?
