Leaving a contaminated cake in water for a long time.

So I had one of my six jars get this orangish stuff in it, which I assumed was a contamination of some kind. This particular cake seemed to grow a lot more of the white foamy looking stuff on it, so when I birthed it, I didn't want to jeopardize my other cakes so I dunked it in a separate container.  I don't have any where to fruit this thing right now, and I didn't want to throw it into my garden, because, quite frankly I already have enough spent cakes out there, I don't want to go overboard.  So instead of throwing it away, I just left it in the water dunk.

Today will mark the third day of it being under water.  What will happen?  Looking at it, it looks like the orangish stuff is going away.  Could this be a way to get rid of this particular contaminate?  What happens if I leave it under water...will it eventually die?

The orange stuff was like a liquid that looked like it was dripping down to the bottom of the jar, so it's not a fuzz or mold it is more like a liquid.  What could it be?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I know there's lots of questions here, but thanks in advance anyways. :grin:

It will continue to get nastier until it becomes putrid and disgusting.
Toss it out now or barf later.

It sounds to me like you drowned a perfectly good cake because you didn't know what metabolites are.  The 'orange liquid' is produced by mushroom mycelium, often in reaction to high temperatures.  Next time, simply rinse them off before the soak.

I've seen the metabolites before, but usually after a few flushes.  This started before the cake was even done colonizing.  Which is why I assumed a contaminate.  I just wanted to be safe, but yes that is what I thought the first time I saw it.  So these cakes can produce these metabolites while still colonizing?  Do you think the cake is drowned and done for?  Or could I still try to fruit it. It has grown quite a bit of white fuzzy stuff above the water line, I wonder if it's not too late.  Well.  I'll wait until the end of the day and see what happens.  Maybe I'll still try to fruit it.

You've raised my hopes, because all this time, I've thought that it could have been waste from the mycelium. But I wanted to be safe.  I smelled it a bit when I opened and it kind of smelled like funk, so I decided then that it was a contaminate.  Either way, I won't be too upset, I do have 5 other jars fruiting now. :shrug:

If it looked like this brf cake, it was fine.  This is harmless metabolites and the cake fruited fine.

Sometimes that's a reaction to heat, sometimes a reaction to contams. In my experience.

Yep, that's pretty much what it looked like, except it was on the bottom of the jar.  Good to know.  Thanks. :thumbup:
