Getting a Patent

I come up with great ideas and inventions all the time. For awhile I kept a notebook of my ideas. It is quite common for me to be walking down a store aisle and see something I came up with a year earlier. Anyway, I have this REALLY good idea and I want to capitalise on it. It seems the first step would be to get a patent on the concept. Anyone with experience in this sort of thing? What steps do I take? How much money does this cost up front? How do I not get fucked over? Any input appreciated.

haha ive seen some informercial stoned as fuck late at night talkign about the intentors kit or some shit to get a patent.

I have an uncle who is a patent lawyer in DC. I don't really know what he does, but there are lawyers who specalize in patents, patent law, and trademarks. At this point I don't know that you need any of those things. Just read everything you can from the patent office link.

I used to have the same shit happen to me debianlinux, all of what you said, when I used to bug my parents to give me money so I could get a patent on things. I had several notebooks as well, I threw some of them out though as the ideas were old and like you said could now be found on store shelfs. It's a bummer-patents are expensive and risky because you don't know if they'll pay off anyway.
