Notebook checks? in college?!

Just noticed that ive lost 5 points on my overall biology grade because of a notebook check. I dont keep a notebook. I read the text books and study in a way that best suits me. I get nothing below an 80 in the course, but my grades average around a 90. Why the hell am i being graded the notes I (dont) take?

This is bullshit, correct?

I've obtained a notebook from a fellow student to copy notes onto, however i feel that i should express to the professor that I in fact do not keep a notebook and that i feel it is unfair to be graded on it. What do you think?

Yep lol. I can tell too. The professors are very lenient and are surprisingly helpful.

Perhaps you should give this professor a bad rating so others can make an informed decision on whether to take a class with him or not.

Yah, your situation is complete utter bullshit. I could understand if it was a remedial course on NOTE TAKING (they do have classes like that in college) but this is just a normal class you're in so it makes no sense.

I would threaten to drop from his class if he keeps this bullshit up. In the ENTIRE 4 years I was in junior college, NO professor ever looked at my notes. Everyone learns in their own way, and people take notes differently.

I had one similar experience in a weaving class. She wanted to see our notes from the book and that we were properly studying the history of textiles and such. I thought it was insane.

I think it's a pretty rare thing for the most part.

Did your professor give you a syllabus? If it says in your syllabus that you need to take notes and that there will be a notebook check, then you are in the wrong and you should have been taking notes.

If not, do some complaining to the right people.

If those are the conditions, you'd better have a blue pen on exam days. I know it sucks. I know it's stupid, but that's what happens.

I believe notebook checks are for primary schools. What college do you go to mate?

whenever a student tells me they dont want to do an assignment because they think it's unfair, i say that's fine, you don't have to do it. one less assignment for me to grade.

If your professor expressed at the beginning of the course, verbally or in writing, that note-taking was required and part of the grade, then it's on you.  If not, it is legitimately unfair and you should bring it up.  Not every student learns effectively by writing notes while listening to a lecture.

I will just add that if you ever did "real" science experiments, it would be absolutely imperative that you keep very accurate, detailed reports of the materials and methods that you used in the lab.

In this respect, a "notebook check" is completely reasonable.
