Is college worth it?
    #3649226 - 01/19/05 06:15 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I am 25. I went to college for two years before I dropped out. I did not like it. I went long enough to waste a lot of money but not long enough to get that piece of paper that would enable me to get a job.

I am thinking about going back, but I can't think of what to go back for. I am actually thinking about getting into a trade. I thoroughly enjoy working with my hands, getting something accomplished, and being able to see what I have done. Sitting behind a desk all day does not appeal to me.

I am of the opinion that if you do not know what you want to go to college for, then it will be a waste of time. I was hoping maybe that I might "fall" into some interesting field of study, but I really don't think I will.

Trades take less time to train in and you earn a shitload of money it seems like. I don't know..anybody have any suggestions. I want to do something that is enjoyable. I think I want a "guy's" job.

i said fuck college as well and went into maintanence mechanics, and i work on printing presses. i get paid more then most college grad's so i don't complain, and i don't have to work a whole lot of hours, except now that i start a new job on friday i will be on call 24/7 cause i am a speacialist. I agree completely with how you feel on working with your hands and seeing a result. It can be quite frustrating at times, but from that frustration to a fix is very, very releiving. I think you should go into a community college or tech school, whichever your state does and try it out. working with machines can be quite a rewarding job.

Hey RF,

Having dropped out of college myself, or as I like to put it, going on indefinite hiatus, I made the decision after three years at two universities in California (UCSB & UCSC) that the degree path was not going to give me what I wanted.  I want to run my own business, be my own boss, and to do that you don't need a piece of paper but rather a head full of reason and applicable knowledge.  It is true that college can (and does) help gain valuable knowledge, which is why I still take classes on the side at my local community colleges to keep my general knowledge base growing.  But college is not the only gateway to success.  I've started my own business over the last six months selling subwoofers and I'm already making enough to live off relatively comfortably.

College is worth it if you want it to be worth it, dependent entirely upon your goals and motivation.  Even if you're not looking to get into a large firm and make $50K out of college, the knowledge gained can be invaluable and as such, definitely worth it.  I look upon my years at university as an acculturation process into modern day society.  A rite of passage if you will.  While I didn't walk away with Arnold Shwarzenegger's signiture on a diploma, I did walk away with a head full of ideas and a greater understanding of the human experience.

In short, do what you think is right.  Listen to others, but don't follow them in blind faith.  If you want to learn a trade, I think you should do just that.  If it doesn't pan out, college will always be there.  That said, if the trade you're looking to get into may not provide the necessary monetary values to meet your needs, you may want to finish off some sort of degree during the interim just so you can have it sitting there on the backburner if all else fails.

Good luck!  Follow your dreams (no bullshit, just do it!) :sun:

i was lucky enough to have an employer (& a union shop?) that paid like 85 % of tuition fees for passing (or C or better, heh...) & took a class or two per semester for more than a decade to finish it off...
glad i did,,,
"using" the degree is another matter, but the intellectual exercise was a worthwhile endeavor, imho...

are you into making money (and really who isn't) or more for doing something you want to do. is there a way to combine the two? can college help with that or are there other avenues.

I dropped out for two years to get my head on stragiht (and get out of debt) and I'm going back because what I want to do involves a degree.

good luck!!!

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

Well what if you are in college but you don't know why and really don't have any dreams of sort. The only thing I'm interested in is like..neuroscience, but my school doesn't offer it. I'm not even sure if I really want neuroscience. I go into phases over and over..want this, want that. I don't know what I want or why I'm at school. I'd rather just lay in bed all day =(

Sorry to hijack the thread. Seemed on topic enough..

what do you like to do randall?

Hm...good question. I can't really nail it down. There are a few times in my daily life that I get really into something. I won't think about other stuff and I will focus completely on it and have a great time doing it. Usually when I get this feeling, I am constructing or tending to something that I can step back and see my progress on.

For example, I am refurbishing an old guitar I have. I have been sanding, plugging holes, and routing my ass off with this thing and I have loved every minute.

judging from your " i really dont know" statement + your desire to work w/ your hands... you either go back to college and become an engineer, or you go into a skilled trade and still make a shit load of money,

hey, i loved college...it taught me a lot socially and educationally, and helped me frame a belief system. but i agree that it isnt for a lot of people.
